Ways to extend Array object in javascript - javascript

i try to extend Array object in javascript with some user friendly methods like Array.Add() instead Array.push() etc...
i implement 3 ways to do this.
unfortunetly the 3rd way is not working and i want to ask why? and how to do it work.

If you don't like that syntax, and you HAVE to extend it from within the constructor,

A while ago I read the book Javascript Ninja written by John Resig, the creator of jQuery.
He proposed a way to mimic array-like methods with a plain JS object. Basically, only length is required.

length: 0, //only length is required to mimic an Array

I don't mean it's good or bad. It's an original way of doing Array operations. The benefit is that you do not extend the Array prototype.
Keep in mind that obj is a plain object, it's not an Array. Therefore obj instanceof Array will return false. Think obj as a façade.

In your third example you're just creating a new property named prototype for the object Array3. When you do new Array3 which should be new Array3(), you're instantiating that object into variable list3. Therefore, the Add method won't work because this, which is the object in question, doesn't have a valid method push. Hope you understand.

You can also use this way in ES6:

Are you trying to do something more complicated then just add an alias for "push" called "Add"?
If not, it would probably be best to avoid doing this. The reason I suggest this is a bad idea is that because Array is a builtin javascript type, modifying it will cause all scripts Array type to have your new "Add" method. The potential for name clashes with another third party are high and could cause the third party script to lose its method in favour of your one.
My general rule is to make a helper function to work on the Array's if it doesnt exist somewhere already and only extend Array if its extremely necessary.

You CANNOT extend the Array Object in JavaScript.
Instead, what you can do is define an object that will contain a list of functions that perform on the Array, and inject these functions into that Array instance and return this new Array instance. What you shouldn't do is changing the Array.prototype to include your custom functions upon the list.
Example:

Why dosen't it change when using spread funtion? [duplicate]

Googling for "javascript clone object" brings some really weird results, some of them are hopelessly outdated and some are just too complex, isn't it as easy as just:
let clone = {...original};
Is there anything wrong with this?
This is good for shallow cloning. The object spread is a standard part of ECMAScript 2018.
For deep cloning you'll need a different solution.
const clone = {...original} to shallow clone
const newobj = {...original, prop: newOne} to immutably add another prop to the original and store as a new object.
EDIT: When this answer was posted, {...obj} syntax was not available in most browsers. Nowadays, you should be fine using it (unless you need to support IE 11).

Following on from the answer by #marcel I found some functions were still missing on the cloned object. e.g.

But Object.assign() not create a deep clone

To fix that, we should use the cloning loop that examines each value of user[key] and, if it’s an object, then replicate its structure as well. That is called a “deep cloning”.
There’s a standard algorithm for deep cloning that handles the case above and more complex cases, called the Structured cloning algorithm.
In order not to reinvent the wheel, we can use a working implementation of it from the JavaScript library lodash the method is called _.cloneDeep(obj).
I found a solution which seems to copy functions as well, correct me if this example is an error.
Attention I have not tested this method with more complex object cases, which, for example, would include methods with this for reference

javascript Object - access child property using dot notation

I created an object that requires a dictionary object be passed to initialize, and has attributes (like length). I'd like to be able to simply access the dictionary's key : value pair by passing something like:
myNewObj['a'] or myNewObj.a
and not having to instead pass myNewObj.dictionary['a'], but can't figure out how to do so.
Is there a way to set a dynamic attribute that, if no other attribute or method exits, will instead look into the dictionary and find the associated key?

Although this might not exactly fit your use case of dynamic attributes, the closest thing I can think of is extending the prototype. At least by using Object.setPrototypeOf* you can avoid defining each method individually and have a base set of functions to apply to each one of these newObject's.

How to modify Array.prototype in Javascript

I am trying to modify Javascripts Array type with a method which will push a value to an array only if its is not already present.
Here is my code:
// add a method conditionally
Array.prototype.method = function (name, func){
if(!this.prototype[name]){
this.prototype[name] = func;
return this;
}
};
// exclusive push
Array.method('xadd', function(value){
if(this.indexOf(value) === -1){
this.push(value)

return this;
});
However when I run the code the scratchpad in Firefox returns:

I want a vanilla way of doing this. Not a library as I am writing an open source library.
When you're putting a method on Array.prototype the method will be available on the instances of Array.
// Add the custom method
Array.prototype.method = function() {

First I would run a check to see if the method is already on the array. Don't go overridding existing prototype methods. In addition, you're not adding func to the prototype - you're adding it to the instances you'll be creating.

Then you need to actually create your array instance:
var arr = [1,2];
At which point you can use the method you created to add the function. Note in your question your check was incorrect:

A better name would be xpush() as it's behaviour is a variant of push().

Javascript: Inherit+modify associative array?

I'm looking for an elegant way to override values in an associative array.
For example, say I have my base options as:
var base_options = {
hintText:"something",

font: {fontSize:16}, left: 95

I want to use this as the base, but be able to override a few items in this base on a case-by-case basis - for example, hintText would be different for each item. What's a clean and elegant way to get a copy of this array with a few parameters modified?
I realize I can change each individual item, as in:
options.hintText = "new thing";
but I suspect there's a more elegant way.
You could use a base class to encapsulate the behavior Weston propose.

I have implemented this function in a few of my projects:

If you happen to be using jQuery, it has a built in extend method on the jQuery object that does this.
You could use the object's prototype to establish the inheritance, like this:

Then, if you have some object A you just call B = inherit_from(A, B_stuff) and that's it.
One advantage is that, because A is the prototype of B, changes done to A are reflected on B.

var thisObj = new base_option(blah, blah, blah, blah, blah);
That may seem like overkill but then you can add all of the new instances to an array and use a for loop for them when you want/need to change them.
