Problem with CSS property visibility from Javascript - javascript

In the code below, the CSS display element is not being read by the Javascript and I don't understand why. After putting in a debugger statement I saw display was empty even though I set it in the CSS. I've been staring at it for a while, so I'm probably missing something obvious.

You can't read css styles of attributes like that but an alternative is to check for an empty value and treat it like display:none

That's because you need to get the computed style of the element.
You can do that using this function:

JavaScript doesn't natively read styles from elements as set in a style sheet. I think JQuery and other libraries do. In order to get this to work you could et the style attribute on the actual tag itself:

Or, check for an empty value and use that as "none"

The style property on HTMLElement instances only reflects the information for the inline styles for that element (e.g., the style attribute on the tag). To get the computed style of an element, which includes any applied by CSS rules, you have to use getComputedStyle (on browsers that support it) or currentStyle (on browsers that support it).
Slightly off-topic: Reliably getting the computed style for an element is one of the (many) areas where a good JavaScript library can save you a lot of time and trouble, whether it's jQuery, Prototype, YUI, Closure, or any of several others. It's not just the getComputedStyle / currentStyle dichotomy, but various browser quirks as well. Using a good library, you can leverage the huge amount of work and research others have done, so you can concentrate on your specific work. Usually. :-)
For instance, using jQuery you could find out whether the element with the id "image" was visible (which can be affected by display: none, visibility: hidden, etc.) like this:

NWJS JS script not functioning right

Im using JS to make divs display as block or none onclick of certain inputs. When i only have it working for one input the scripts work find, but as soon as i impliment the code for the second input it glitches out and both buttons open up the div thats only supposed to work for the second button.

First off the markup looks kinda messy. You don't need to add an ID, name, and class to everything. Only add those things if you need them.
name is rarely used, it's a way to connect to HTML elements. Like connected radio dials. You probably don't need this at all in this code.
class this should only be used if you need to add a specific CSS classname to adjust the styles. If you are not doing that, don't include it.
id should be assigned to a unique value that only occurs once on the page. it can be used to auto-scroll to that position of the page if the url contains #whatever and that matches an element with id="whatever". Though it is more commonly used just to target a specific element in your JavaScript. If you aren't doing either of those things, don't add it.
Another problem you have is order of execution. You can either define your JS first (<script> at the top) and then reference the functions with onclick in the HTML, or (more commonly), define your HTML first with ID's, then have your <script> at the bottom targeting the IDs (document.getElementById('asdf')).
Here is a cleaner version of your code.

Changing properties of all <hr> html elements

In css I have set all the <hr> elements in my html to "display:none;" which works.
I have an onclick event listener set up to change the "display" to "block".
I use:
document.getElementsByTagName("hr").innerHTML.style.display = "block";
I get an error "Cannot read property 'style' of undefined".
Do it the following way:

This is incorrect in two ways
getElementsByTagName gives you a list on elements and there is no method to operate on all elements, so you'll have to loop through all of them and add the required style individually.
innerHTML returns a string containing the mark up in an element but <hr> doesn't have any thing in it and the style property is on the <hr> itself.

Simple (and very effective) solution:
tag your body with a class-element

in css don't hide hr directly, but do

now define a second style in your css

in your buttons onClick, change the one and only body class from no_hr to block_hr

This is a very charming solution, because you don't have to iterate over elements yourself, but let your browsers optimized procedures do their job.
For people who want a solution that doesn't require JavaScript.
Create an invisible checkbox at the top of the document and make sure that people can click on it.

<label for="ruler">Click to show or hide the rules</label>
Then tell the stylesheet that the <hr>s should be hidden by default, but should be visible if the checkbox is checked.
#ruler, hr {display:none}
#ruler:checked ~ hr {display:block}

getElementsByTagName() returns a node list, and therefore you must iterate through all the results. Additionally, there is no innerHTML property of an <hr> tag, and the style must be set directly on the tag.
I like writing these types of iterations using Array.forEach() and call:
[].forEach.call(document.getElementsByTagName("hr"), function(item) {
item.style.display = "block";
});
Or, make it even easier on yourself and use jQuery:
$("hr").show();

Modify global CSS using Javascript? [duplicate]

It's easy to set inline CSS values with javascript. If I want to change the width and I have html like this:
<div style="width: 10px"></div>
All I need to do is:
document.getElementById('id').style.width = value;
It will change the inline stylesheet values. Normally this isn't a problem, because the inline style overrides the stylesheet. Example:

Ok, it sounds like you want to change the global CSS so which will effictively change all elements of a peticular style at once. I've recently learned how to do this myself from a Shawn Olson tutorial. You can directly reference his code here.
Here is the summary:
You can retrieve the stylesheets via document.styleSheets. This will actually return an array of all the stylesheets in your page, but you can tell which one you are on via the document.styleSheets[styleIndex].href property. Once you have found the stylesheet you want to edit, you need to get the array of rules. This is called "rules" in IE and "cssRules" in most other browsers. The way to tell what CSSRule you are on is by the selectorText property. The working code looks something like this:

I don't know why the other solutions go through the whole list of stylesheets for the document. Doing so creates a new entry in each stylesheet, which is inefficient. Instead, we can simply append a new stylesheet and simply add our desired CSS rules there.

Note that we can override even inline styles set directly on elements by adding " !important" to the value of the property, unless there already exist more specific "!important" style declarations for that property.
I don't have rep enough to comment so I'll format an answer, yet it is only a demonstration of the issue in question.
It seems, when element styles are defined in stylesheets they are not visible to getElementById("someElement").style

In Test 2, on the first call, the items left value is undefined, and so, what should be a simple toggle gets messed up. For my use I will define my important style values inline, but it does seem to partially defeat the purpose of the stylesheet.

You can get the "computed" styles of any element.
IE uses something called "currentStyle", Firefox (and I assume other "standard compliant" browsers) uses "defaultView.getComputedStyle".
You'll need to write a cross browser function to do this, or use a good Javascript framework like prototype or jQuery (search for "getStyle" in the prototype javascript file, and "curCss" in the jquery javascript file).
That said if you need the height or width you should probably use element.offsetHeight and element.offsetWidth.

Mind, if you add an inline style to the element in question, it can act as the "default" value and will be readable by Javascript on page load, since it is the element's inline style property:
<div style="width:50%">....</div>
This simple 32 lines gist lets you identify a given stylesheet and change its styles very easily:

I've never seen any practical use of this, but you should probably consider DOM stylesheets. However, I honestly think that's overkill.
If you simply want to get the width and height of an element, irrespective of where the dimensions are being applied from, just use element.offsetWidth and element.offsetHeight.

Why JavaScript didint see that id visibility is set to hidden

Hi I whant that some element in my page appears only when a check box is selected, and disappears when it is not.
So I have this HTML:

As Juhana stated in the comments, the answer you're looking, which is explained perfectly in the link - is that: .style.* only looks at inline elements, quote:
"The element.style property lets you know only the CSS properties that were defined as inline in that element (programmatically, or defined in the style attribute of the element), you should get the computed style."
If you tweak your function a little bit to check if .style.visibility hasn't been set yet (thus ''), it'll toggle it upon first click.

I don't know why the other solutions go through the whole list of stylesheets for the document. Doing so creates a new entry in each stylesheet, which is inefficient. Instead, we can simply append a new stylesheet and simply add our desired CSS rules there.

Note that we can override even inline styles set directly on elements by adding " !important" to the value of the property, unless there already exist more specific "!important" style declarations for that property.
I don't have rep enough to comment so I'll format an answer, yet it is only a demonstration of the issue in question.
It seems, when element styles are defined in stylesheets they are not visible to getElementById("someElement").style

In Test 2, on the first call, the items left value is undefined, and so, what should be a simple toggle gets messed up. For my use I will define my important style values inline, but it does seem to partially defeat the purpose of the stylesheet.

You can get the "computed" styles of any element.
IE uses something called "currentStyle", Firefox (and I assume other "standard compliant" browsers) uses "defaultView.getComputedStyle".
You'll need to write a cross browser function to do this, or use a good Javascript framework like prototype or jQuery (search for "getStyle" in the prototype javascript file, and "curCss" in the jquery javascript file).
That said if you need the height or width you should probably use element.offsetHeight and element.offsetWidth.
The value returned is Null, so if I have Javascript that needs to know the width of something to do some logic (I increase the width by 1%, not to a specific value)
Mind, if you add an inline style to the element in question, it can act as the "default" value and will be readable by Javascript on page load, since it is the element's inline style property:
<div style="width:50%">....</div>
This simple 32 lines gist lets you identify a given stylesheet and change its styles very easily:

I've never seen any practical use of this, but you should probably consider DOM stylesheets. However, I honestly think that's overkill.
If you simply want to get the width and height of an element, irrespective of where the dimensions are being applied from, just use element.offsetWidth and element.offsetHeight.
