Dates can be compared as if they are integers (since they contain a time value that is an integer representing an instant in time). So if you want to see if a date is between two other dates, then you can create two date objects and see if others lie between them:

One simple way to validate a date string is to convert to a date object and test that, e.g.

When testing a Date this way, only the month needs to be tested since if the date is out of range, the month will change. Same if the month is out of range. Any year is valid.

I recommend to use moment.js. Only providing date to moment will validate it, no need to pass the dateFormat.

This solution does not address obvious date validations such as making sure date parts are integers or that date parts comply with obvious validation checks such as the day being greater than 0 and less than 32. This solution assumes that you already have all three date parts (year, month, day) and that each already passes obvious validations. Given these assumptions this method should work for simply checking if the date exists.
For example February 29, 2009 is not a real date but February 29, 2008 is. When you create a new Date object such as February 29, 2009 look what happens (Remember that months start at zero in JavaScript):

The above line outputs: Sun Mar 01 2009 00:00:00 GMT-0800 (PST)
Notice how the date simply gets rolled to the first day of the next month. Assuming you have the other, obvious validations in place, this information can be used to determine if a date is real with the following function (This function allows for non-zero based months for a more convenient input):

The following function adds months to a date in JavaScript (source). It takes into account year roll-overs and varying month lengths:

The above solution covers the edge case of moving from a month with a greater number of days than the destination month. eg.
Add twelve months to February 29th 2020 (should be February 28th 2021)
Add one month to August 31st 2020 (should be September 30th 2020)
If the day of the month changes when applying setMonth, then we know we have overflowed into the following month due to a difference in month length. In this case, we use setDate(0) to move back to the last day of the previous month.
Note: this version of this answer replaces an earlier version (below) that did not gracefully handle different month lengths.

This works for all edge cases. The weird calculation for newMonth handles negative months input. If the new month does not match the expected month (like 31 Feb), it will set the day of month to 0, which translates to "end of previous month":

As demonstrated by many of the complicated, ugly answers presented, Dates and Times can be a nightmare for programmers using any language. My approach is to convert dates and 'delta t' values into Epoch Time (in ms), perform any arithmetic, then convert back to "human time."

All these seem way too complicated and I guess it gets into a debate about what exactly adding "a month" means. Does it mean 30 days? Does it mean from the 1st to the 1st? From the last day to the last day?
If the latter, then adding a month to Feb 27th gets you to March 27th, but adding a month to Feb 28th gets you to March 31st (except in leap years, where it gets you to March 28th). Then subtracting a month from March 30th gets you... Feb 27th? Who knows...
For those looking for a simple solution, just add milliseconds and be done.

Reasoning:
Depends what you mean by previous week's first day. I'll assume you mean previous sunday for the sake of this discussion.
To find the number of days to subtract:
Get the current day of the week.
If the current day of the week is Sunday you subtract 7 days
If the current day is Monday you subtract 8 days
...
If the current day is Saturday 13 days
The actual code once you determine the number of days to subtract is easy:
var previous_first_day_of_week=new Date().setDate(today.getDate()-X);
Where X is the above discussed value. This value is today.getDay() + 7
If by first day of the week you meant something else, you should be able to deduce the answer from the above steps.
Note: It is valid to pass negative values to the setDate function and it will work correctly.
For the code about Monday. You have that special case because getDay() orders Sunday before Monday. So we are basically replacing getDay() in that case with a value of getDay()'s saturday value + 1 to re-order sunday to the end of the week.
We use the value of 6 for subtraction with Monday because getDay() is returning 1 higher for each day than we want.

First day of week can be either Sunday or Monday depending on what country you are in:

If you want to set a dateobject to the previous sunday you can use:
a.setDate(a.getDate()-7-a.getDay());

In the other examples you will have a problem when sunday falls in other month. This should solve the problem:
