I have been looking around for a HTML formatter to incorporate with a project I am doing. I need it to be written in Javascript since I want the formatting done on the client side.
The problem is, the few that I have tried don't work very well... For example:
http://www.davidpirek.com/blog/html-beautifier-jquery-plugin : Has a problem with one of the For loops (in the cleanAsync function). Chrome says "unexpected token ILLEGAL"
JS Beautifier on GitHub : When I have links in the HTML it will put a newline character after it. The problem is, I have a period directly after the link in some cases and it will add a space between the link text and the period in the sentence. I tried poking around to fix it but I could not.
Are there any others, or does anyone have recommendations to fix the above two?
EDIT:
This is for editing code, so I just need something to tab in the lines, etc. The code output will go in a textarea.
A few to look at, all have working demos:
http://alexgorbatchev.com/SyntaxHighlighter/
http://shjs.sourceforge.net/
http://jush.sourceforge.net/
http://dojotoolkit.org/reference-guide/dojox/highlight.html
use https://github.com/beautify-web/js-beautify and pass your code to html_beautify() method.

I am trying to modify a js file (It's the first time I try it) and I got something very difficult to understand for me, a mess of inline code with no breaks.
I need it to be clean to be able to understand it, so I've been looking for a solution to break up the text into lines that represents something. I tried to split the lines where the semicolon are, but it didn't solved much.
I remember there where a program that was able to do something similar with css (I can't remember it's name).
Is it possible to do it with notepad++? if not, do you know which program can actually do it?
Thank you
Try using a code beautifier for your javascript, it is currently in 'minified' version.

I am struggling with strange behavior of textarea... I am writing small snippet store for my own needs and I would like to paste a code fragment into textarea and then format it using jQuery library, but sometimes I get very strange output (jQuery library is turned off). Screenshot shows it all:
In notepad it looks the way I want it, but in pre tag first line is not indented... Could you explain me why? I am using Ruby and Ruby on Rails if it matters.
Thanks in advance!
So, you're populating the textarea from RoR, right?
I don't suppose it's as simple as your <% %> being on a new line, and then your code indenting adding extra spaces in?
I am trying to deploy my bookmarklet in public, but I am not sure what is the best way to do it. Suppose I have,
javascript:(function(){console.log("hello");}())
And I make it draggable to the bookmarklet by enclosing it within a href tag. The trouble is that HTML special characters are encoded like %07d for the above snippet. What's the conventional way to solve this problem?
Thank you!
It should work fine, till it is in the following format.
Bookmarklet
Note: I changed console.log() to alert() to make the result view able immediately.

I am new to javascript and have been working overnight to see how I can fix this error on IE: Here's the question I asked here yesterday: How to fix this jquery function to work in IE?
After spending more than 20 hours I still can't find out why it wouldn't render parts of my page properly.
At the very least I thought I could find a way to get the errors so I can fix them or do a separate javascript file just for IE, but no luck.
How do I see error messages for my script?
I used F12 to see the developer console but no help there, it won't even tell me what's wrong.
I am using IE 8 and 9.
I know that there could be many things wrong with this and I appreciate your patience in advance for helping me out. Thanks!
You have invalid HTML including many invisible characters within the head section which is also blocking the W3C HTML Validator from getting past the first few errors.
When I copied your source code into my text editor, I found a bunch of invalid invisible characters. Did you cut/paste your JavaScript from someplace like a web-page? The invisibles only appear in front of your custom written scripts in the <head> and nowhere else. This could certainly explain a lot, including the validation error about a misplaced </head> tag. Go back to your editor and delete the indentations on every single line within the entire <head></head> section, then re-indent each line from scratch.
I also see an invalid closing tag, </label6>.
Remove the invisible characters, fix the invalid HTML, and see what IE does.
Moving forward, get yourself a powerful text editor that will allow you to see invisible characters so you can delete them and properly indent as needed. Otherwise, I recommend re-typing your code rather than cutting & pasting.
For JavaScript errors, the best is to see the 'Console' tab for records.
If IE's one isn't showing anything, maybe you could try using FireBug Lite, adding the following script after <head> (YES, put it as first thing, so it loads first than anything else).
<script type="text/javascript" src="https://getfirebug.com/firebug-lite.js"></script>
On side note, maybe isn't a JS problem and yes something about running code locally. IE has some policies that mostly block client-side code from running. (Remember those annoying ActiveX prompts?). Check Intranet configuration on Settings.
I have been using Eclipse for some weeks now and I start getting used to it.
However, one thing really annoys me:
When editing JavaScript (I didn't try any other language yet), the editor window keeps jumping to the start of the document I am editing.
This mostly happens when the code currently contains syntax errors and mostly while / after deleting lines.
Especially constructs like { = and sometimes unterminated strings / comments seem to cause this problem.
When it happens, only the view scrolls to the top of the document - the cursor stays where it was before the "jump" occurred.
Anyone having an idea on how to fix this?
I believe the problem described above is related to this bug:
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=318095
The work around is to disable the "Link with Editor" option from the Project Explorer. Which is to say make sure the icon with two arrows facing in opposite directions at the top of the file tree is not enabled. Disabling this option resolved the issue for me.
Looks like a problem with the implementation of the JavaScript editor. Most probably the jump occurs when the JavaScript-Parser is not able to parse your document and throws an exception. You might consider to report a bug to the eclipse project (maybe there is already such a report?).
As a workaround you might consider to adapt your way of typing the code a bit. Try to write the code in a way that does not confuse the parser (for example it might help to immediately close a newly created comment and THEN write the content instead of open the comment, write the content and finally close the commend). Same for strings, blocks ...
I am having the same problem. I had this line of code in my file and I could consistently reproduce the issue:
$.preload(preloadImages
, {
base:assetsUrl+'b/images/',
ext:'.png'
});
I changed it to the following and I no longer have the problem.
$.preload(preloadImages, {
base:assetsUrl+'b/images/',
ext:'.png'
});
I get this Phenomenon, when i'm editing in a Java-Class while still residing in a Debug-Process. The Debugger recognises the Change and reevaluates the Code and jumps back in order to be able to reexecute only the changed Code.
Hii i got solution goto
Window->Preferences->search autosave
and disble it and hit apply and close button.
this worked for me !
