Sorting li's in jQuery loaded divs - javascript

I make a 3 language website, where I need to sort the comments from all the 3 languages, that they are visible on every language's pages. http://www.polinapasztircsak.com/guestbook/
I tried loading with jQuery .load method, and it works, but the problem is that it loads the separate languages in divs (I didn't know other way to load and append it) and I can't sort the comment lis outside their divs. Here is the code:
var commEng = $('<div></div>').load('../guestbook/ .comment');
var commHun = $('<div></div>').load('../vendegkonyv/?lang=hu .comment');
var commIta = $('<div></div>').load('../libro-ospiti/?lang=it .comment');
$(".commentlist").empty().append(commEng).append(commHun).append(commIta);
Do you have some other suggestion how I could load in the lis, that I have them together in the same ul, and then which method or plug-in to use for sorting that.

You can try using $.get or any other ajax functions to load the comments, then sort them using Javascript's sort function. The code would look something like this:
var loaded = 0,
sites = 3,
comments = [];
function getComments(url){
$.get(url, function(data){
comments[loaded++] = ($(data).find('.comment'));
if(loaded === sites){
var insert = comments[0];
for(var i = 1; i < comments.length; i++){
insert = insert.add(comments[i]);
}
$('.commentlist').append(insert.sort(function(a, b){
var dateA = new Date($.trim($(a).find('.comment-meta:first a').text()).replace('at', '') + ' GMT'),
dateB = new Date($.trim($(b).find('.comment-meta:first a').text()).replace('at', '') + ' GMT');
return dateB.getTime() - dateA.getTime();
}));
}
});
}
getComments('../guestbook/');
getComments('../vendegkonyv/?lang=hu');
getComments('../libro-ospiti/?lang=it');
This will sort the jQuery element received through ajax with sort() by passing in a function that will compare the dates of the comments scraped from the comment meta. Also remember that divs in ul unordered list is not valid HTML.

Merging Multiple Arrays Evenly/Alternating with Javascript and Google AppScript

I'm trying to merge multiple arrays evenly/alternating in javascript/Google appScript. There are several arrays (5 or 6). I've tried 2 different methods, but neither worked. I don't work a lot with javascript honestly and I've managed to get the code to this point, but I can't get it merge properly; and most of them said merging two arrays to one (might be my problem).
I've seen plenty on php examples that were on how to do this and they are pretty straight forward in logic reading and I understand them better, but all javascript methods I've looked at and tried so far have failed to produce the results I want. I'm not sure if it's the way AppScript is formatting the arrays or they're just no made to handle more that 2.
My data looks similar to this at the moment:
var title = ["sometitle1","sometitle2","sometitle3"];
var link = ["somelink1","somelink2","somelink3"];
var date = ["somedate1","somedate2","somedate3"];
var data = ["somedata1","somedata2","somedata3"];
var all = [title,link,date,data];
var mix = [];
Note: all the variable data will/should be the same length since the data is being pulled from a spreadsheet.
My desired output is:
mix = ["sometitle1","somelink1","somedate1","somedata1","sometitle2","somelink2","somedate2","somedata2","sometitle3","somelink3","somedate3","somedata3"];
I tried using appscript to merge them with this: return ContentService.createTextOutput(title + link + data + date), but it didn't work out properly, it printed them in that order instead of merging the way I'd like them too.
Then I tried using a loop merge that I found here on sstackoverflow:
for (var i = 0; all.length !== 0; i++) {
var j = 0;
while (j < all.length) {
if (i >= all[j].length) {
all.splice(j, 1);
} else {
mix.push(all[j][i]);
j += 1;
}
}
}
But it splice merges every letter with a comma
mix = [s,o,m,e,t,i,t,l,e,1,s,o,m,e,t,i,t,l,e,2,s,o,m,e,t,i,t,l,e,3,s,o,m,e,l,i,n,k,1,...]
and doesn't alternate data either.
The code (2 version) I'm working on is: here with Output
&
Here with Output
(Also, dumb question, but do I use title[i] + \n OR title[i] + "\n" for adding new lines?)
Use a for loop and the push() method like this :
function test(){
var title = ["sometitle1","sometitle2","sometitle3"];
var link = ["somelink1","somelink2","somelink3"];
var date = ["somedate1","somedate2","somedate3"];
var data = ["somedata1","somedata2","somedata3"];
//var all = [title,link,date,data];
var mix = [];
for(var n=0;n<title.length;n++){
mix.push(title[n],link[n],date[n],data[n]);
}
Logger.log(JSON.stringify(mix));
}
And also : title[i] + "\n" for adding new lines
Edit following comments :
Your code should end like this :
...
for(var n=0;n<titles.length;n++){
mix.push(titles[n],links[n],descriptions[n],pubdates[n],authors[n]);
}
var mixString = mix.join('');// convert the array to a string without separator or choose the separator you want by changing the argument.
//Print data and set mimetype
return ContentService.createTextOutput(mixString)
.setMimeType(ContentService.MimeType.RSS);
}

Google Script to see if text contains a value

I have a google form that when the user submits it will trigger my function to run which is creating a summary of what they submitted as a Google Doc. I know it can automatically send an email but I need it formatted in a way that my user can edit it later.
There are some check boxes on the form -- but the getResponse() is only populated with the items checked and I need it to show all possible choices. Then I will indicate somehow what was checked.
I can't find a way to see if a text contains a value.
Like in Java with a String, I could do either .contains("9th") or .indexOf("9th") >=0 and then I would know that the String contains 9th. How can I do this with google scripts? Looked all through documentation and I feel like it must be the easiest thing ever.
var grade = itemResponse.getResponse();
Need to see if grade contains 9th.
Google Apps Script is javascript, you can use all the string methods...
var grade = itemResponse.getResponse();
if(grade.indexOf("9th")>-1){do something }
You can find doc on many sites, this one for example.
Update 2020:
You can now use Modern ECMAScript syntax thanks to V8 Runtime.
You can use includes():
var grade = itemResponse.getResponse();
if(grade.includes("9th")){do something}
I had to add a .toString to the item in the values array. Without it, it would only match if the entire cell body matched the searchTerm.
function foo() {
var ss = SpreadsheetApp.getActiveSpreadsheet();
var s = ss.getSheetByName('spreadsheet-name');
var r = s.getRange('A:A');
var v = r.getValues();
var searchTerm = 'needle';
for(var i=v.length-1;i>=0;i--) {
if(v[0,i].toString().indexOf(searchTerm) > -1) {
// do something
}
}
};
I used the Google Apps Script method indexOf() and its results were wrong. So I wrote the small function Myindexof(), instead of indexOf:
function Myindexof(s,text)
{
var lengths = s.length;
var lengtht = text.length;
for (var i = 0;i < lengths - lengtht + 1;i++)
{
if (s.substring(i,lengtht + i) == text)
return i;
}
return -1;
}
var s = 'Hello!';
var text = 'llo';
if (Myindexof(s,text) > -1)
Logger.log('yes');
else
Logger.log('no');

Page with multiple dropdown filters

I have a page which uses dropdowns to filter a listing. I have over 10 filters now and each of the change function, I am calling an AJAX request and passing corresponding variables to the PHP function. Like this :
$("#categories").change(function() {
uri = "myurl" ;
var status=$("#statusfilter").val();
var category=$("#categories").val();
var network=$("#networksfilter").val();
var prod_type = $("#prodtypefilter").val();
loadData(uri,category,status,network,prod_type);
});
and in loadData() I have the following code :
function loadData(uri,category,status,network,prod_type){
url + = category+"/"+status+"/"+network+"/"+prod_type;
$('#userdata').load(url);
}
Here I have given only 4 filters only, but it is actually 10 and may increase.Anyway this is working fine. But the problem is that as I increase the filters, I need to write this same for every dropdown change function. Is there any better approach to optimze the code and so I don't need to load a bunch of JS ?
Rename your filter elements' IDs to start with same word, for example "filter_". Then get all of them at once:
$('select[id^="filter_"]').change(function() {
var uri = "myurl";
var filters = new Array();
$('select[id^="filter_"]').map(function () {
filters[$(this).name()] = $(this).val(); // not tested, just an idea
});
loadData(uri,filters);
});
.map() iterates over its elements, invoking a function on each of them and recording the selected option value in the array.
You can use .each() if it's more intuitive from .map() for you:
$.each('select[id^="filter_"]', function() {
filters[$(this).name()] = $(this).val(); // not tested, just an idea
});
Note: It's a good idea to use associative array as #Tony noticed below to be sure which filter is for which database table attribute in your server side script.
You will need to write some code in any cases, but you can reduce it, for example like this:
$("#categories").change(function() {
uri = "myurl";
var filters = {
status: $("#statusfilter").val(),
category: $("#categories").val(),
network: $("#networksfilter").val(),
prod_type: $("#prodtypefilter").val()
}; // order is important
loadData(filters );
});
loadData(filters) {
var url = '';
for (var filterName in filters)
url += '/' + (filters[filterName] || 'any'); // here some def value needed
url = url.substring(1); // cut first slash
$('#userdata').load(url);
}
EDIT
Or even like this:
loadData(filters) {
var url = Object.keys(filters).map(function(el) {
return filters[el] || 'any';
}).join('/');
$('#userdata').load(url);
}

Improving jquery select speed

I have this code which manipulates the asp.net treeview html code.
This code gets run frequently, so its important that it runs as fast as possible.
I want to learn more about jquery selectors and improving its speed. So far I was able to get this code myself.
Some things I am not sure about is if you want the third child element, do I use [2] or .eq(2) or :nth-child(2)? Also what if I use $ to select something that was from an array of selected stuff, is this necessary, or is it already selected?
Does anyone know any tricks or hints I can do to improve my jquery select efficiency?
Thanks.
function showResultsOnTreeview(treeviewID, filenameDictionary) {
var sectionNodes = $("#" + treeviewID + " > table");
var numOfSections = sectionNodes.length;
var i, j, sectionName, divContainer, itemNodes, numOfItems, itemName, itemTag, itemPath;
for (i = 0; i < numOfSections; i += 1) {
sectionName = $(sectionNodes[i]).text();
divContainer = $(sectionNodes[i]).next('div');
divContainer.hide();
itemNodes = $('table', divContainer);
numOfItems = itemNodes.length;
for (j = 0; j < numOfItems; j += 1) {
itemTag = $('td', $(itemNodes[j])).eq(2);
itemTag.removeClass('treeViewResult');
itemName = getNameFromItem($(itemNodes[j]).text());
itemPath = filenameDictionary[itemName];
if (itemPath != null) {
if (itemPath.indexOf(sectionName + "/" + itemName) != -1) {
itemTag.addClass('treeViewResult');
divContainer.show();
}
}
}
}
}
There is some optimisation you can do. The first on is for sure to use .eq() instead of []. Like here, you hare creating a jQuery object :
var sectionNodes = $("#" + treeviewID + " > table");
But then later, you do this :
sectionName = $(sectionNodes[i]).text();
divContainer = $(sectionNodes[i]).next('div');
Here you are creating 2 more, unneeded, jquery object, you could just do this :
sectionName = sectionNodes.eq(i).text();
divContainer = sectionName.next('div');
Then, i do't know if you have a different way to do it, but if you can remove the "loop in a loop", that would be great.
After, instead of using context selectore ($('selector', $element)), use find. Context use find so it will reduce the number of function calls. Take this line for example :
$('td', $(itemNodes[j])).eq(2)
You are creating 2 jQuery object when you can do the same without an extra object and could use .find():
itemTag = itemNodes.eq(j).find('td').eq(2);
Basicly, use .find() instead of context and avoid creating unneeded jQuery object. Hope that will help.

How to get the next element of an array with Jquery onclick

Hi all i am trying to change the html of an object from an array of htmls. But i am having problem iterating properly. I managed to make it work once
EDIT
After a few complains about the clarity of my question I will rephrase it. I have a div panel called .trpanel and a button called #trigger2 (it is a next button). Then I have a series of divs with texts that contain translations. I want when I press the button (called next) to cycle through the translations one by one on the trpanel.
var ltranslation = [];
ltranslation[0] = $("#translation-en-1").html();
ltranslation[1] = $("#translation-ur-en").html();
ltranslation[2] = $("#translation-fr-en").html();
ltranslation[3] = $("#translation-it-en").html();
ltranslation[4] = $("#translation-sp-en").html();
ltranslation[5] = $("#translation-po-en").html();
ltranslation[6] = $("#translation-fr-en").html();
ltranslation[7] = $("#translation-de-en").html();
var l= ltranslation;
$("#trigger2").off('click').on('click',function(){
for (var i = 0; i <= ltranslation.length; i++){
if (i==7){i=0;}
$(".trpanel").html.ltranslation[i]; or ???//replace().ltranslation[]+i??? the code throws errors
}
});
I am quite new to Javascript and i am getting a bit confused with the types of objects and arrays and loops. I managed once to add the htmls but without replacing them ... so they all came one after the other. The i tried to change the code and it hasn't worked since. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
A lot of guessing, but seems like you are trying to do this :
var trans = $('[id^="translation-"]'),
idx = 0;
$("#trigger2").on('click',function(){
$(".trpanel").html( trans.eq(idx).html() );
idx = idx > 6 ? 0 : idx+1;
});
FIDDLE
I think you are trying to do this:
if (i == 7) {
i = 0; // I don't really know why you are doing this, but it will reset the loop
}
$(".trpanel").html(ltranslation[i]); //I'm passing ltranslation[i] to the html method. Instead of .html.ltranslation[i].
}
Also, without seeing any html, I'm not sure but I think you may want to iterate over .trpanel ?
Something like:
$(".trpanel").eq(i).html(ltranslation[i]);
Another thing (so you can make your code clearer I think). You can abstract the array population in a function, like this:
var ltranslation = [];
var languages = ["en-1", "ur-en", "fr-en", "it-en", "sp-en", "po-en", "fr-en", "de-en"];
$.each(languages, function(index) {
ltranslation[index] = $("#translation-" + this).html();
});
// Then you can use ltranslation
If you want to flip through several translations I would implement it that way:
var translations=["hej","hello", "hallo","hoy"];
var showTranslation=function(){
var current=0;
var len=translations.length;
return function(){
var direction=1;
if (current>=len) current=0;
$("#text").text(translations[current]);
current+=direction;
}
}();
$("#butt").on("click", showTranslation);
Fiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/Xr9fz/
Further: You should give your translations a class, so you could easily grab all of them with a single line:
$(".translation).each(function(index,value){ ltranslation.push(value); })
From the question : I managed once to add the htmls but without replacing them -
I think you want to add all of these items into $(".trpanel"). First, dont take the HTML of each element, clone the element itself :
//method ripped from Nico's answer.
var ltranslation = [];
var languages = ["en-1", "ur-en", "fr-en", "it-en", "sp-en", "po-en", "fr-en", "de-en"];
$.each(languages, function(index) {
ltranslation[index] = $("#translation-" + this).clone();
});
Then you could append everything into the container, so add the htmls but without replacing them. append takes in an array without replacing the previous html.
$("#trigger2").off('click').on('click',function() {
$(".trpanel").append(ltranslation);
});
I don't know what exactly you're tring to do, but I've put comments in your code to help you better understand what your code is doing. The net effect of your code is this (which I doubt you want) :
$("#trigger2").off('click').on('click',function(){
$(".trpanel").html(ltranslation[7]);
});
This is your code with some comments and minor changes
var ltranslation = [];
ltranslation[0] = $("#translation-en-1").html();
ltranslation[1] = $("#translation-ur-en").html();
ltranslation[2] = $("#translation-fr-en").html();
ltranslation[3] = $("#translation-it-en").html();
ltranslation[4] = $("#translation-sp-en").html();
ltranslation[5] = $("#translation-po-en").html();
ltranslation[6] = $("#translation-fr-en").html();
ltranslation[7] = $("#translation-de-en").html();
var l= ltranslation;
$("#trigger2").off('click').on('click',function(){
for (var i = 0; i < ltranslation.length; i++){
//if (i==7){i=0;} <-- This will cause an infinite loop won't it? are you trying to reset i? i will reset next time loop is called,
$(".trpanel").html(ltranslation[i]); //<-- this will overwrite elements with class .trpanel ltranslation.length times...
///you'll see only the value of translation[7] in the end
}
});
EDIT
To do what you want to do based on your comments, try this:
var ltranslation = [];
ltranslation[0] = $("#translation-en-1").html();
ltranslation[1] = $("#translation-ur-en").html();
ltranslation[2] = $("#translation-fr-en").html();
ltranslation[3] = $("#translation-it-en").html();
ltranslation[4] = $("#translation-sp-en").html();
ltranslation[5] = $("#translation-po-en").html();
ltranslation[6] = $("#translation-fr-en").html();
ltranslation[7] = $("#translation-de-en").html();
var counter = 0;//a global counter variable
$("#trigger2").click(function(){ //eeverytime button is clicked do this
$(".trpanel").html(ltranslation[counter]); //set the html to an element of array
counter++; //increment counter
if(counter==ltranslation.length) //reset the counter if its bigger than array len
counter=0;
});
