Does anyone know if you can remove head elements on a button click and how to do it with jQuery?
I am trying to get rid of certain script tags from the html head when a button is clicked.
For instance. I have 1 screen view with a slideshow controlled by an external javascript file. When I click on a button "Click to get rid of this elements JS" I want to remove the external javascript path from the HTML Head.
Any ideas. Have been at this thing for a week or so.
You can add an id to a script element then remove that ID:
<script type="text/javascript" src="init.js" id="initJs" ></script>
<span id="removeScript"></span>
$('#removeScript').click(function() {
$('#initJs').remove();
});
You can do this sort of thing using javascript, sure, but before you do it, you might want to ask yourself again why. Here's a link describing how to do it in pure javascript with a jquery example provided by the other answerer:
http://www.javascriptkit.com/javatutors/loadjavascriptcss2.shtml
But try to keep in mind that most modern browsers will keep these external resources in memory for at least as long as the page is open. Therefore, you won't really be doing much.
I don't think its a good Idea to remove Entire HEAD Element. 'Cause your Page may contain some more Elements (i.e., title, style..) which are appended to Head Element. If you want to remove a particular script Element do something like
$(function() {
$('input[type=button]').click(function() {
$('script[src=path/file.js]').remove();
});
});
Edit :
var flag = false;
function breakTheCode() {
if(!flag) {
//run your code
}else return;
}
$(function() {
$('input[type=button]').click(function() {
flag = true; //flag is set, so we no more using/ running your code
breakTheCode(); //call you function/method
});
});
For my part the best solution is to use ID on the scripts.
I read many page over the web, try many solutions, and the only one who works fine every time is to remove a script like a div with an id !
For remove js file : $("script[src='your.js']").remove();

I want to make sure that all JavaScript happens before the page is loaded. I am changing some innerhtml, but don't want the original innerhtml to show.
Currently, when my page loads "Books" is displayed for a brief moment, then finally when the script is read, it gets replaced. How do I prevent it from displaying the initial text?
FYI the script exists inside a php file.
<?php
?>
<script>
function changeme(){
var myvar = "test-string-is-long-to-notice-the-changed-text";
var spans = document.getElementsByTagName("span");
for(var i=0;i<spans.length; i++) {
if(spans[i].textContent.trim().toLowerCase()==="books") { //is this the "Welcome" span?
spans[i].innerHTML = myvar; //change to new value
break; //hop out of the loop, we're done
}
}
}
window.onload = function() {
changeme();
};
</script>
It is not a good idea to load JS before HTML, because you can not change the HTML elements before loading it using js.
Solution 1: Initially, keep the html tags empty that you do not want to show, because you want to show new data from JS.
Solution 2: Initially, keep the styles for those elements "display: none" and when you add the data using Js in element. Update the style to display: 'block' or any other you want, eg spans[i].style.display = 'block';.
You cant apply JS to a html document that doesnt yet exist. Your html is always loaded first, then your JS is applied. What you could be seeing here is the html is loaded and the JS is taking like what--a second to load and make the change? I recommend figuring out a more efficient way to implement the JS you need. You could just be seeing JS latency. You could use a more efficient implementation plus some CSS to fix it. I could be wrong here but it just doesn't make sense to apply JS to html went the html isnt even there yet.
How would I apply any JS to that if I'm trying to do it before the browser has even parsed and rendered my html?
Also remember that PHP is always "loaded" first, then html, then JS
So I've got this little piece of HTML that I have zero access to, and I need to change the URL of where it's linking, to somewhere else.
Now I've looked around, and I've tried different approaches and non seem to work so I must be doing something wrong.
the Html code:
<div class="manageable-content" data-container="edit_register_ind_container">
<a class="entry-text-link secondary-step step-button" id="register_ind_container" href="oldurl">Register</a>
</div>
First I wanted to try something that seemed easier, which was to change the displayed text "Register" to "Start a Fundraiser"
This is what I have got for that part:
// url manipulation
$(document).ready(function(){
$("#register_ind_container").click(function(){
$("#manageable-content a").text('Start a Fundraiser');
});
$("#register_ind_container").attr("href", "http://google.ca");
});
No luck so far for any of it.
a little background information:
I am using a platform called Luminate/Blackbaud, its a CMS with a weird set up. header tags and stuff like that go in a different place than the html body and the css is somewhere else as well (but I'm just using ftp to reference it in the header).
How I'm referencing the javascript code.
<script type="text/javascript" src="../mResonsive/js/urlmanipulation.js"></script>
My css works so I'm certain this should to, but I just don't know why it isn't.
All suggestions welcome (except for asking for the html access because I have, 3 weeks ago lol)
Thank you for your time!
I saw your both code :
$("#register_ind_container").attr("href", "http://google.ca");
This line will execute on page load so href should be changed on load
$("#register_ind_container").click(function(){
But when you performing this click on Id
it wont work because at that instance this id associated with an hyperlink
so hyperlink having the default subset rules
for Overriding this you can try
$("#register_ind_container").click(function(e){
// custom handling here
e.preventDefault();
$(this).text('Start a Fundraiser');
});
But this is also not a Good Practice. Hope this helps !
$(document).ready(function(){
$("#register_ind_container").click(function(){
$(this).text('Start a Fundraiser');
$(this).attr("href", "http://google.ca");
});
});
You are changing the URL outside the click event.. Wrap it inside the click event.. Also make use of $(this)
// url manipulation
$(document).ready(function(){
$("#register_ind_container").click(function(){
$(this).text('Start a Fundraiser').attr("href", "http://google.ca");
});
});
I am trying to enhance the menu of my website a bit by making use of the jQuery accordion plugin:
http://jqueryui.com/accordion/
This works perfectly fine and i think that it is a great plugin to make use of... However, i have noticed that it requires a specific layout in order to achieve these results:
<div id="accordion">
<h3>Section 1</h3>
<div>
<p>
ETC...
</p>
</div>
NB: repeated for every result
</div>
Now this is a bit of a problem in that when javascript is disabled, the entire output of this menu is displayed (all categories and containing information).
This is simply too much information to be output all at once and this is the reason that it has been broken up with PHP in the first place. In essence it would look like this:
// No category selected
* Fruits
* Vegetables
// Category selected
o Fruits
- Apples
- Oranges
* Vegetables
// Javascript Disabled
o Fruits
- Apples
- Oranges
* Vegetables
- Potatoes
- Onions
So what i would like to do, is provide an alternate means of navigation for users that have disabled javascript (the old menu that is fully functional and works regardless).
I currently make use of a few options in modernizer:
http://modernizr.com/
To increase browser support on some CSS properties i have used. I am aware that it can be used to detect if javascript is enabled by appending a class "js" to the body tag.
So with that, i decided to try and wrap the old menu within a containing div, and the new menu within a containing div. My idea is that i can then these divs with display: none;.
Before i carry on, i am really just guessing here so if i am going about this the wrong way... I would appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction. With that out of the way, i found an article on stackoverflow that relates to this:
PHP & <noscript> combination to detect enabled JavaScript in browser
And with my very limited knowledge of jQuery have adapted it slightly to fit what i hope to achieve:
<script type="text/javascript">
$(document).ready(function(){ // Use jQuery!
// Remove the no-js and add the js (because JS is enabled (were using it!!)
$("body").removeClass("no-js").addClass("js");
})
// Put it in a var so you dont traverse the DOM unnecessarily.
var useJS = $("body").hasClass("js");
if(useJS){ // true or false if <body> has class JS.
// JS Enabled
$("#oldMenu").css("display", "none");
$("#newMenu").css("display", "inline");
} else {
// JS NOT enabled
$("#newMenu").css("display", "none");
$("#oldMenu").css("display", "inline");
}
</script>
Now the problem I am facing is that i cannot seem to get this script to register or make any visible difference. When i look at the body tag in the source there is no class on the body tag. The menu is not triggering as i thought it would and i am now after quite some time... Very confused.
If anyone could offer me some assistance, advice, information or indication that would help me to solve this current issue, i would really, REALLY appreciate that!
Thank you for taking the time to read through my line story! :)
EDIT:
#RomainPaulus suggested this and it works:
<script type="text/javascript">
$(document).ready(function(){ // Use jQuery!
// Remove the no-js and add the js (because JS is enabled (were using it!!)
$("body").removeClass("no-js").addClass("js");
// Put it in a var so you dont traverse the DOM unnecessarily.
var useJS = $("body").hasClass("js");
if(useJS){ // true or false if <body> has class JS.
// JS Enabled
$("#oldMenu").css("display", "none");
$("#newMenu").css("display", "inline");
} else {
// JS NOT enabled
$("#newMenu").css("display", "none");
$("#oldMenu").css("display", "inline");
}
})
</script>
Kenneth's response explains a lot, but I have noticed something else. Your code
var useJS = $("body").hasClass("js");
is executed before
$(document).ready(function(){ // Use jQuery!
// Remove the no-js and add the js (because JS is enabled (were using it!!)
$("body").removeClass("no-js").addClass("js");
})
You should put everything inside the $(document).ready(function(){ ... })
So I guess that explains why your code doesn't work.
The problem you face here is that, obviously when Javascript is not enabled, you're Javascript is not executing.
What you need to is hide the DIV by default with CSS. Then, when your page loads, show it through JS.
Javascript disabled => Div stays hidden, because no code is executed
Javascript enabled => div is hidden on load, but the script shows it
Also, if Javascript is disabled, Modernizr won't help, since it's a JavaScript library.
I'm trying to write jQuery code to count the number of <img> elements contained on a site. The site is comprised of 4 separate HTML pages, all in the same folder on the server. Only one of these pages, "pics.html", loads the .js file that needs to perform this function (pics.html is the only page that needs to know how many images are on the site).
It's easy to get the <img> elements from pics.html, since pics.html is the page that loads the script:
var numImgs = $('img').length;
...but I'm confused as to how I would perform this same function in reference to a different page. Is it possible to specify the HTML page that the selector refers to?
I tried this, as a wild guess:
var numImgs = $('test.html:img').length;
Unsurprisingly, it didn't work. I googled for the answer, but couldn't find a solution - or if I did find one, I suppose I didn't understand it well enough to realize that it was the answer.
Thanks for any help you can offer!
To select an object from an external file, you'll need to use $.load().
Reference: http://api.jquery.com/load/
Try this
$(document).ready(function(){
$('#myDiv').load('/remotePage.html #TargetDiv', function () {
var elements = $('.class', this).length;
alert(elements);
});
});
Often times, when I use struts 2 tags, the loading of a page will be incomplete apparently because of single quote or double quote characters from the struts 2 tag interfering with such characters from javascript.
One example I am very eager to get working is as follows:
var me = '<s:a href=\'http://www.google.com\'>Google Link</s:a>';
$('#appnSelect').html(me);
So what I am concerned about is when single and double quotes are inside that me string on the right side of line 1. Ultimately, I need to get <s:select> to work, but this problem seems to creep in with a number of tags like the above example. Replace the <s:a> tag with an <a> tag, and voila, it works. However, when the <s:a> tag gets expanded, the page will incompletely load.
Is there an easy solution somewhere I am missing? One thing I did try was with the theme attribute setting theme="simple" because sometimes that helps me when the output gets rendered incorrectly. That did not work in this case.
Generating HTML from tags like that in the middle of a JavaScript string constant is always going to be an ugly business. In addition to quote characters, you're also likely to get newlines. Strictly speaking you don't know what you're going to get, and you can't control it.
One thing that comes to mind is that you could drop the tags into dummy <script> blocks marked as a non-JavaScript type:
<script id='anAnchor' type='text/html'>
<s:a href='http://www.google.com'>Google Link</s:a>
</script>
The browser won't try to execute that. You can then do this in your JavaScript code:
$('#appnSelect').html($('#anAnchor').html());
What should work with very little thinking:
<s:a id="google" style="display: none;" href="www.google.com">Google Link</s:a>
Now just grab the the element using the id in your script. Might be better if you set up a class. There are id, style and class attributes for all struts2 tags.
I believe the issue is with your escaping of the single quotes inside the <s:a> tag. In my experience with using <s:url>, I've done the following:
var url = "<s:url value='/someAction.action' />"
I believe the same syntax should hold true for <s:a>.
Additionally, look in your JSP container's error log, and see if you can find an error relating to that <s:a> tag. That may provide some additional insight to the problem.
This is my answer, which will not be the best answer because Pointy's response pointed me in the correct direction. However, up votes still appreciated :)
First, you need the script blocks which are not rendered. I have 2 because a checkbox will toggle between which one is displayed:
<script type="myType" id="abc">
<s:select name="selectName" list="#list1" listValue="%{prefix + '-' + name}" theme="simple"/>
</script>
<script type="myType" id="abc2">
<s:select name="selectName" list="#list2" listValue="%{prefix + '-' + name}" theme="simple"/>
</script>
Next, I create a region which is blank in the html code
<div id="innerRegion">
</div>
Then, I need to put something on the screen when the page first comes up, so go with this:
<script type="text/javascript">
$(document).ready(function(){
$('#innerRegion').html( $('#abc').html() )
});
I needed to put this at the end of my document because onLoad was already being used by a parent page. So I am saying abc is the correct default.
Then I need logic to handle what happens when the checkbox is pushed:
var buttonPressed = false;
$(window).load(
function()
{
LocalInit();
});
function LocalInit() {
$('#myForm input[name=buttonValue]').change(
function()
{
buttonPressed = !buttonPressed;
if (buttonPressed == true)
{
$('#innerRegion').html( $('#abc2').html() )
} else
{
$('#innerRegion').html( $('#abc').html() )
}
$('#dataId').href = document.location.href;
}
);
}
I think what was tripping me up ultimately was that I was trying to force the s:select tag through jQuery functions when as you see above it did not turn out to be necessary. I could just write the s:select as normal.
