Is there a way to convert variable names to strings in javascript? To be more specific:
var a = 1, b = 2, c = 'hello';
var array = [a, b, c];
Now at some point as I go through the array, I need to get variable names (instead of their values) as strings - that would be 'a' or 'b' or 'c'. And I really need it to be a string so it is writeable. How can I do that?

Use a Javascript object literal:
var obj = {
a: 1,
b: 2,
c: 'hello'
};
You can then traverse it like this:
for (var key in obj){
console.log(key, obj[key]);
}
And access properties on the object like this:
console.log(obj.a, obj.c);

What you could do is something like:
var hash = {};
hash.a = 1;
hash.b = 2;
hash.c = 'hello';
for(key in hash) {
// key would be 'a' and hash[key] would be 1, and so on.
}

Js how to set an item at a nested index in an empty array [duplicate]

I hope someone can help me with this Javascript.
I have an Object called "Settings" and I would like to write a function that adds new settings to that object.
The new setting's name and value are provided as strings. The string giving the setting's name is then split by the underscores into an array. The new setting should get added to the existing "Settings" object by creating new nested objects with the names given by each part of the array, except the last part which should be a string giving the setting's value. I should then be able to refer to the setting and e.g. alert its value. I can do this in a static way like this...

Can anyone help me work out how to do this dynamically?
I presume there has to be a for...loop in there to itterate through the array, but I haven't been able to work out a way to create the nested objects.

Put in a function, short and fast (no recursion).

I love this ES6 immutable way to set certain value on nested field:

Basically you are progressively writing a string "obj['one']= {}", "obj['one']['two']"= {} and evaling it;

Converting array into object in javascript [duplicate]

I try to create an object with a value for the last key. I just have an Array with the keys and the value but dont know how it will be possible to create an object without use references in javascript.
As far as I know there isnt a way to create a reference of a variable in javascript.
This is what i have:

jQuery $.each with sorted object keys [duplicate]

Let's say I have a Javascript associative array (a.k.a. hash, a.k.a. dictionary):
var a = new Array();
a['b'] = 1;
a['z'] = 1;
a['a'] = 1;
How can I iterate over the keys in sorted order? If it helps simplify things, I don't even need the values (they're all just the number 1).
You can use the Object.keys built-in method:
var sorted_keys = Object.keys(a).sort()
(Note: this does not work in very old browsers not supporting EcmaScript5, notably IE6, 7 and 8. For detailed up-to-date statistics, see this table)
You cannot iterate over them directly, but you can find all the keys and then just sort them.

However there is no need to make the variable 'a' an array. You are really just using it as an object and should create it like this:

I agree with Swingley's answer, and I think it is an important point a lot of these more elaborate solutions are missing. If you are only concerned with the keys in the associative array and all the values are '1', then simply store the 'keys' as values in an array.
Instead of:
var a = { b:1, z:1, a:1 };
// relatively elaborate code to retrieve the keys and sort them
Use:
var a = [ 'b', 'z', 'a' ];
alert(a.sort());
The one drawback to this is that you can not determine whether a specific key is set as easily. See this answer to javascript function inArray for an answer to that problem. One issue with the solution presented is that a.hasValue('key') is going to be slightly slower than a['key']. That may or may not matter in your code.
There's no concise way to directly manipulate the "keys" of a Javascript object. It's not really designed for that. Do you have the freedom to put your data in something better than a regular object (or an Array, as your sample code suggests)?
If so, and if your question could be rephrased as "What dictionary-like object should I use if I want to iterate over the keys in sorted order?" then you might develop an object like this:

Get the keys in the first for loop, sort it, use the sorted result in the 2nd for loop.

You can use the keys function from the underscore.js library to get the keys, then the sort() array method to sort them:

I really like #luke-schafer's prototype idea, but also hear what he is saying about the issues with prototypes. What about using a simple function?

I have some objects with different nesting. Example:

This uses recursion and assumes the json is arbitrarily nested, and assigns key1, key2, etc to those keys whose value is a non-null object.
Edit: Fixed to make first key use rowX (sorry for all single letter var names)
This takes each (local) property of the object data, puts it as rowN property in rows and puts the old property name as the key property, I would not recommend incrementing the key property like in one of your examples.

BTW - double nested loops is not recursion. It is also not clear that you need recursion, many solutions can be solved with both recursion and imperative execution with loops. The example above does not use recursion, but rather what is likely an imperative loop.

Consider this object in javascript,
var obj = { a : { b: 1, c: 2 } };
given the string "obj.a.b" how can I get the object this refers to, so that I may alter its value? i.e. I want to be able to do something like
obj.a.b = 5;
obj.a.c = 10;
where "obj.a.b" & "obj.a.c" are strings (not obj references).
I came across this post where I can get the value the dot notation string is referring to obj but what I need is a way I can get at the object itself?
The nesting of the object may be even deeper than this. i.e. maybe
var obj = { a: { b: 1, c : { d : 3, e : 4}, f: 5 } }
To obtain the value, consider:

Returning an assignable reference to an object member is not possible in javascript, you'll have to use a function like the following:

If this javascript runs in a browser then you can access the object like this:
window['obj']['a']['b'] = 5
So given the string "obj.a.b" you have to split the it by .:
var s = "obj.a.b"
var e = s.split(".")
window[e[0]][e[1]][e[2]] = 5
Returning an assignable reference to an object member is not possible in javascript. You can assign value to a deep object member by dot notation with a single line of code like this.
new Function('_', 'val', '_.' + path + ' = val')(obj, value);
In you case:
