CSS Menu Hover Underline Animation - javascript

I'm trying to create an underline animation when hovering on menu items (based on this CodePen). For some reason, all my menu items are underlined instead of just one when hovering. I only want the menu item that is hovered to be underlined, not everything.
Here is my code:
html {
background-color: #131313;
}
.pages {
position: absolute;
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
font-family: Helvetica Neue, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;
font-size: 17px;
list-style: none;
}
.pages li {
float: left;
display: inline-block;
padding: 15px;
}
.pages a {
color: white;
text-decoration: none;
}
.pages a:after {
content: '';
position: absolute;
width: 0;
height: 3px;
display: block;
margin-top: 5px;
right: 0;
background: #fff;
transition: width .4s ease;
}
.pages a:hover:after {
width: 100%;
left: 0;
background: #fff;
}
<ul class="pages">
<li>Home</li>
<li>About</li>
<li>Work</li>
<li>Projects</li>
<li>Connect</li>
</ul>
Please help!

Remove position:absolute from .pages a:after. Elements with absolute positioning are not in the normal document flow. In your snippet your 100% width will not be 100% of a but 100% of nearest relativly/absolutly positioned parent(body by defaul; ul in your case).
As an alternative, you may set position:relative to li, so that :after element will be underlying li.
html {
background-color: #131313;
}
.pages {
position: absolute;
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
font-family: Helvetica Neue, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;
font-size: 17px;
list-style: none;
}
.pages li {
float: left;
display: inline-block;
padding: 15px;
position: relative
}
.pages a {
color: white;
text-decoration: none;
}
.pages a:after {
content: '';
position: absolute;
width: 0;
height: 3px;
display: block;
margin-top: 5px;
right: 0;
background: #fff;
transition: width .4s ease;
}
.pages a:hover:after {
width: 100%;
left: 0;
background: #fff;
}
<ul class="pages">
<li>Home</li>
<li>About</li>
<li>Work</li>
<li>Projects</li>
<li>Connect</li>
</ul>
My explanation may be to complicated so you may look at snippet below. I tried to explain positioning.
.box {
width: 100px;
height: 100px;
}
#parent {
background: pink;
width: 200px;
height: 200px;
}
#child1 {
position: relative;
top: 10px;
left: 10px;
background: lightgreen;
}
#child2 {
position: absolute;
background: lightyellow;
}
<div id="parent" class='box'>
<!--parent-->
<!-- relative element stays relative to it's original position but can be shifted-->
<div id="child1" class='box'>position:relative with "top"and"left" of 10px</div>
<div id="child2" class='box'>position:absolute</div>
</div>
<!--
notice how yellow box is stays where it should be without "top"&"left" assigned, but it's owerlaping shifted green box

Can a header slide under a sticky navbar?

I want the heading to "slide" along under the navbar. But now it looks like the picture.
I have just started and would be very happy about some support. I already have some experience with HTML and CSS but now I don't know what to do.
My goal is to have the heading slide under the navbar.
sorry for the long CSS:)

thank you for the help
You'll need to make the sub-menu appear on link hover like this
nav li:hover .sub-menu {
display: block;
background: #fff;
}

Unable to display content behind navbar when fixed position

I have a simple react app which displays my navbar, but whenever i do its position fixed; it stays at top but the content does not hide behind.
My navbar:
class Nav extends Component {
render() {
return (
<div>
<header className="toolbar">
<nav className="toolbar__navigation">
<div className="toolbar__toggle-button">
<DrawerButton drawer={this.props.drawer} click={this.props.drawerClickHandler} />
</div>
<img className="Nav__Logo-A" src={Mylogo} alt=""/>
<div className="toolbar__logo">Akcosh</div>
<div className="spacer"></div>
<div className="toolbar_navigation-items">
<ul>
<li>Software</li>
<li>About</li>
<li>Profile</li>
<li>Contact</li>
</ul>
</div>
</nav>
</header>
</div>
)
}
}
my css:
.toolbar{
width: 100%;
position: fixed;
background-color: #212121;
top: 0;
left: 0;
height: 45px;
}
.toolbar__logo{
margin-left: 1rem;
}
.toolbar__navigation {
display: flex;
align-items: center;
height: 100%;
padding: 0 1rem;
}
.toolbar__logo a{
color: #282828;;
text-decoration: none;
font-size: 1.5rem;
}
.spacer{
flex: 1;
}
.toolbar_navigation-items ul{
list-style: none;
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
display: flex;
}
.toolbar_navigation-items li{
padding: 0 0.5rem;
}
.toolbar_navigation-items a{
color: white;
text-decoration: none;
}
.toolbar_navigation-items a:hover,
.toolbar_navigation-items a:active{
color: aqua;
}
#media(max-width: 768px){
.toolbar_navigation-items{
display: none;
}
.toolbar{
height: 68px;
border-bottom: 1px solid #aca4a4;
background-color: #e5e3e30a;
}
.toolbar__logo a{
font-family: Roboto,Helvetica,sans-serif;
letter-spacing: 1.6px;
font-size: 20px;
margin-left: 5px;
font-weight: 400;
}
.Nav__Logo-A{
animation-name: out;
position: absolute;
height: 210%;
width:100%;
left: -36%;
margin-top: 9px;
transition: .4s all;
}
.Nav__Logo-A:hover{
cursor: default;
transform: rotate(360deg);
left: -36%;
margin-top: 10px;
}
}
}
I have tried everything but nothing is working; i want my navbar fixed on top and content behind it, if i have some other component below the Nav component, i want its content/text to go behind nav because it is fixed at top
try to modify the z-index so it can stay on top
.toolbar{
width: 100%;
position: fixed;
background-color: #212121;
top: 0;
left: 0;
height: 45px;
z-index:2; // or some bigger value
}
One thing you can try is setting the z indexes!
.toolbar{
width: 100%;
position: fixed;
background-color: #212121;
top: 0;
left: 0;
height: 45px;
z-index:99;
}
And then after that, if your content is still displaying in front of the navbar, go into that items CSS class and add
.exampleClass {
z-index:-1;
}

I think it has something to do with the height of the #page-content div that I have set to min-height: calc(100vh - 138px) to compensate for the navbar at the top and the footer at the bottom.
Alternatively it may have something to do with visibility or positioning on the other elements. The layout of the site changes completely on smaller devices...
I've tried adding -webkit-overflow-scrolling: touch; to various elements, but even when I set it to all elements using * {} it still doesn't scroll.
I've read a dozen posts some of which point to position: fixed so i've tried switching to absolute positioning...
It seems like the whole page tries to scroll instead of the #content or #page-content div... i'm just at a loss! PLEASE HELP!!!
Add below CSS inside #media only screen and (max-width: 800px) in your style.css at line no 4030. It'll unable your parent scroll and disable your individual container scroll and also you add an individual footer in each container. So I also hide all container's footer and visible only last container footer. Try this I hope it'll help you out. Thanks
#ascensorBuilding {
overflow: auto !important;
}
#ascensorBuilding > div {
position: static !important;
overflow: hidden !important;
height: auto !important;
transform: none !important;
}
#ascensorBuilding > div .footer {
display: none;
}
#ascensorBuilding > div:last-child .footer {
display: block;
}

Masking issue when sliding multiple divs behind a line

I have a CSS animation effect that's difficult to implement due to layering problems. See the snippet below:
var toggle = document.getElementById('toggle');
function toggleF() {
'use strict';
document.querySelector('nav').classList.add('fuzzyState');
}
toggle.addEventListener('click', toggleF);
body {
height: 90%;
color: #222;
text-align: center overflow:hidden;
}
button {
outline: 0;
cursor: pointer
}
#toggle {
float: left;
width: 38px;
height: 38px;
padding: 5px;
margin: auto;
background: #fff;
color: #666;
border: 0;
font-size: 150%
}
#toggle:hover {
background: #222;
color: #eee;
user-select: none;
-webkit-user-select: none
}
#toggle:active {
background: #022;
color: #fff
}
nav ul:after {
content"";
display: block;
clear: both
}
nav ul {
height: 150px;
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
font-size: 150%
}
nav li {
width: 140px;
height: 140px;
margin: 5px;
float: left;
list-style: none;
user-select: none;
-webkit-user-select: none
}
nav button {
display: block;
position: relative;
top: 50%;
width: 100%;
height: 100%;
background: transparent;
border: 0;
text-transform: uppercase;
transform: translateY(-50%)
}
nav button:hover {
background: #022;
color: #eee
}
nav button:active {
background: #033;
color: #fff
}
ul hr {
position: relative;
top: 50%;
width: 1px;
height: 90px;
margin: 10px;
background: #eee;
border: 0;
float: left;
transform: translateY(-50%);
z-index: 2
}
nav.fuzzyState #dos {
transform: translateX(230px)
}
nav.fuzzyState #uno {
transform: translateX(400px);
-webkit-filter: blur(1px)
}
nav.fuzzyState #tres {
/*transform:translateX(-230px)*/
}
nav #tres {
position: relative;
z-index: 1
}
#leftNavMask {
background: #fff;
position: absolute;
top: 15%;
right: 0;
left: 356px;
width: 200px;
height: 190px;
text-align: justify;
transform: translateY(-50%);
}
#rightNavMask {
background: #fff;
position: absolute;
top: 15%;
right: 0;
left: 156px;
width: 200px;
height: 190px;
text-align: justify;
transform: translateY(-50%);
z-index: -1
}
#dos,
#tres {
transition: transform 0.7s ease-in-out
}
#uno {
transition: transform 1s ease-in-out, -webkit-filter 1s ease-in-out;
}
<button id="toggle">+</button>
<nav>
<ul>
<li id="uno"><button>uno</button></li>
<li id="dos"><button>dos</button></li>
<hr>
<li id="tres"><button>tres</button></li>
<div id="leftNavMask"></div>
<div id="rightNavMask"></div>
</ul>
</nav>
After the + button is clicked my goal is to make the tres button slide to the left while being masked just like the uno and dos buttons, except in the opposite direction. It seems impossible to pull off because whatever z-index I give any elements there's no way to have the left mask on top of the correct elements while simultaneously having the right mask do its job. Are there any simple ways to do this without jQuery? Thanks.
To clarify: The uno and dos buttons are currently going under a div that is colored to match the background. I need the tres button to slide left under a second div that is somehow on top of the tres button to mask it but also below the uno and dos buttons so they aren't blocked at the beginning.
Long time since this question was asked, therefore, most probably you have found a solution already. But just in case, here you have a possible approach to what you wanted to achieve.
Instead of using absolute positioned divs with the same color of the background to cover the animated li elements, why don't use an overflow hidden property in the ul container? If you do this, the ul will act as a "mask" and when the li elements get animated outside the ul, they will be automatically "hidden". Take a look at your snippet already modified using this approach (I have used two ul elements to animate the li elements separately):
I saw that you placed an hr (and two div) inside the ul element and a ul should only contain li elements. For this solution, I used a pseudo-element to mimic the vertical line.
var toggle = document.getElementById('toggle');
function toggleF() {
document.querySelector('nav').classList.toggle('fuzzyState');
}
toggle.addEventListener('click', toggleF);
body {
color: #222;
}
button {
cursor: pointer;
outline: 0;
}
#toggle {
background: #fff;
border: 0;
color: #666;
float: left;
font-size: 150%;
height: 38px;
margin: auto;
padding: 5px;
width: 38px;
}
#toggle:hover {
background: #222;
color: #eee;
user-select: none;
}
#toggle:active {
background: #022;
color: #fff
}
nav ul {
display: inline-block;
font-size: 150%;
margin: 0;
overflow: hidden;
padding: 0;
position: relative;
}
nav ul.left::after {
content: "";
display: block;
border-right: 1px solid #eee;
height: 90px;
position: absolute;
right: 0;
top: 50%;
transform: translateY(-50%);
}
nav li {
display: inline-block;
height: 140px;
list-style: none;
margin: 5px;
user-select: none;
transition: transform 0.7s ease-in-out;
width: 140px;
}
nav button {
background: transparent;
border: 0;
display: block;
height: 100%;
position: relative;
text-transform: uppercase;
top: 50%;
transform: translateY(-50%);
width: 100%;
}
nav button:hover {
background: #022;
color: #eee;
}
nav button:active {
background: #033;
color: #fff;
}
nav.fuzzyState ul > li {
pointer-events: none;
}
nav.fuzzyState ul.left > li {
transform: translateX(200%);
}
nav.fuzzyState ul.right > li {
transform: translateX(-100%);
}
<button id="toggle">+</button>
<nav>
<ul class="left">
<li><button>uno</button></li>
<li><button>dos</button></li>
</ul>
<ul class="right">
<li><button>tres</button></li>
</ul>
</nav>
