What I'm looking to do is remove the parenting div by ID after the button is clicked, to avoid closing all divs with the same class. In my actual code, the user is able to append multiple divs to the screen on button click, and each is assigned it's own ID. Each has a boostrap button up top that should close the parent div only instead of having to create 12 separate functions (the limit of div placement for the user).
HTML
<div class='some classes' id='box1'>
<span class='btn btn-primary'>Close this div</span>
</div>
<div class='some classes' id='box2'>
<span class='btn btn-primary'>Close this div</span>
</div>
CSS
#box {
width:200px;
height:200px;
background:black;
}
JS
$(document).ready(function(){
$('.btn').on('click',function(){
var getParentID = $('.btn').parent().attr('id');
$(getParentID).remove();
});
});
This is essentially all I was working with to try to get it to function. Any help is much appreciated!
Use $(this) instead of $('.btn') since you want to target the specific element
var getParentID = $(this).parent().attr('id');
Once the id is available use jquery id selector to target the element
$(document).ready(function() {
$('.btn').on('click', function() {
var getParentID = $(this).parent().attr('id');
$("#" + getParentID).remove();
});
});
#box {
width: 200px;
height: 200px;
background: black;
}
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<div class='some classes' id='box1'>
<span class='btn btn-primary'>Close this div</span>
</div>
<div class='some classes' id='box2'>
<span class='btn btn-primary'>Close this div</span>
</div>
Note: The answer is specific to your question.Alternatively the parent div can be removed even without getting it's id
What you want to do is to skip the jQuery and do it in pure javascript.
var parent = child.parentElement;
parent.parentElement.removeChild(parent);

I'm stuck with a jQuery issue that I don't manage to solve.
I've created a menu with sub menu elements. I would like to toggle the height of content by clicking in menu items. The thing is when I click on other item, the content collapse. Kind of tricky to explain, I've put two websites doing the job
http://www.polerstuff.com/ -> When you click on 'shop' and then on 'info', the sub menu stays open. The same trick was seen here http://topodesigns.com/
I guess these two websites are using Shopify.
$(document).ready(function() {
$(".button").on("click", function() {
if($(".content").height() == 0) {
$(".content").animate({height: "300px"});
}
else if($(".content").height() == 300) {
$(".content").animate({height: "0px"});
}
});
});
Here is my jsfiddle
-> Thank a lot in advance.
Here's version of your fiddle that uses the data attribute to target divs with desired content, and another data tag containing desired heights to animate (but there are many other ways).
Clicking on the same button toggles it shut, this is achieved by adding an indicative class.
The 'hiding' divs may contain further divs with classes and layout as required.
$(document).ready(function (){
$(".b").on("click", function (){
var $this = $(this),
target = $this.data('target'),
tall = $this.data('tall'),
content = $(".content");
target = $('.'+target).html(); // get the html content of target divs
content.html(target); // insert said content
if (!$this.hasClass('on')) { // if it hasn't been clicked yet..
$(".b").removeClass('on'); // say that none have been clicked
$this.addClass('on'); // say that just this one has been clicked
content.animate({height: tall}, 200); // animate to the height specified in this buttons data attribute
} else {
content.animate({height: "0px"});
$this.removeClass('on');
}
});
});
.content {
background: coral;
width: 100%;
height: 0px;
overflow:hidden;
}
.hiding{
display: none;
}
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.0/jquery.min.js"></script>
<button class="b" data-target="alpha" data-tall="4em">Button</button>
<button class="b" data-target="bravo" data-tall="7em">Button</button>
<button class="b" data-target="charlie" data-tall="5em">Button</button>
<div class="content">Le contenu</div>
<div class="hiding alpha"> some stuff </div>
<div class="hiding bravo"> other things </div>
<div class="hiding charlie"> bits and pieces </div>
How can I show the div-element below the pushed button?
html:
<button id="one" class="btn">One</button>
<button id="two" class="btn">Two</button>
<button id="three" class="btn">Three</button>
<div id="popup">Message!</div>
JS:
$('.btn').click(function(e) {
const targetBtn = e.target;
$("#popup").show("slow").delay(3000).hide("slow"); //HOW TO SHOW IT BELOW TARGET BUTTON
})
Because your div has an id not class so you have to use # notation for ids:
$('.btn').click(function (e) {
$("#popup").css({
'position': 'absolute',
'left': $(this).offset().left,
'top': $(this).offset().top + $(this).height() + 5
}).show("slow").delay(3000).hide("slow");
});
Demo
Not sure if your button is allready visible or not before you want to replace it. But this puts the div after the clicked button:
$("button").click(function(){
$("#popup").insertAfter($(this));
});
http://jsfiddle.net/6FLLt/
If you want to show() it use
$("button").click(function(){
$("#popup").show().insertAfter($(this));
});
http://jsfiddle.net/6FLLt/2/
UPDATE
If you want to place the message below the buttons visually you have to change to html and CSS like so:
HTML
<div class="relative">
<button id="one" class="btn">One</button>
</div>
<div class="relative">
<button id="two" class="btn">Two</button>
</div>
<div class="relative">
<button id="three" class="btn">Three</button>
</div>
<div id="popup">Message!</div>
CSS
#popup{position:absolute; bottom:-20px; display:none;}
.relative{position:relative; float:left;}
http://jsfiddle.net/6FLLt/5/
try something like this
$('.btn').click(function(e) {
$(this).after($('#popup'));
})
Note : User # for id and .(dot) for class
How can I show the div-element below the pushed button?
Set the margin of the div accordingly (to show the div directly below the pushed button):
$('.btn').click(function(e) {
var $elem = $(e.target),
$div = $('#popup');
$div.css('margin-left', $elem.offset().left + 'px');
$("#popup").stop().show("slow").delay(500).hide("slow");
})
Demo: http://jsfiddle.net/abhitalks/5ef5L/
Note: You should .stop() before attempting the animation, because when you click another button, the earlier animation might still be underway, hence giving unexpected results.
Aside: You need to use the $('#...') selector, because popup is an id.

jQuery click() event catch-all?

Closed 9 years ago.
I have a button, when it's clicked, shows a div with images(like an emoticon panel of a chat) if I click it again the div hides, but what I want to do is:
If the div is already showed up and then I click any other thing of the page, I want to hide it. I tried this:
$("myBtn").click(function(){
// show div
});
$(document).click(function(){
// hide div
});
When "myBtn" is clicked, the div shows up and hide automatically. How could I fix it ?
Thank you for your time.
You could try the following:
$(document).on('click', function(evt) {
if(!$(evt.target).is('#my-id')) {
//Hide
}
});
UPDATE
Just so you can have a full working set:
$('#mybutton').on('click', function(evt) {
$('#mydiv').show();
return false;//Returning false prevents the event from continuing up the chain
});
At the same time you show your original <div>, add a new <div> to your page that has a style/css set like this:
.ui-widget-overlay {
position: absolute;
top: 0;
left: 0;
height: 100%;
width: 100%;
z-index: 100;
}
Make sure the original <div> -- the one you want to be able to click on without closing it -- has a higher z-index, but everything else on the page has a lower z-index.
When you add the new div to your page, give it the .ui-widget-overlay class, and add a click handler to intercept clicks on that <div>. Adding the overlay div with the click handler looks like this:
$('<div class="ui-widget-overlay">')
.click(function() {
$('.ui-widget-overlay').remove();
$('selector-for-original-div').hide();
})
.appendTo('body');
The upshot of all this: You have two divs. The first is what you want to display and allow users to click in without closing it, the second is an invisible div underneath the first taking up the entire browser window so that if the user clicks anywhere but the upper div, it intercepts the click event. Inside that click event, you remove the hidden div and hide the original.
updated
Assuming that you have a class 'active' to the element when it shows, it would be:
$('html').click(function(e){
if(!$(e.target).attr("id") == "my-id") {
}
});
<script type="text/javascript">
$('body').click(function() {
if($("div").is(':visible')){
$("div").hide();
}
});
</script>
the $("div") selector here should be your div that is either has id or class for example: if the <div class="class" id="id"> then $("div") will be changed to $("div.class") or $("div#id")
<div class="slControlWrapper">
<div class="slControlLabel">
<asp:Label ID="lblSL" CssClass="lblSL" runat="server">Clickable Label</asp:Label>
</div>
<div class="slControlSeparator">
</div>
<div class="slControlDropDown">
</div>
<div id="wndSL">
This is the hidden content of my DIV Window
</div>
<div id="test">
I am for test click on me
</div>
</div>
$('.slControlLabel, .slControlDropDown').bind('click',function(event){
$('#wndSL').show();
event.stopPropagation();
});
$('html').click(function() {
$('#wndSL').hide();
});
#wndSL {
display:none; background-color: blue; height:500px; width:590px;
}
Have a gander here:
http://jsfiddle.net/nCZmz/26/
I would like to add animation effect to following code when showing tree items.
I know that jquery has slide functions, and css has "transition", but not sure how to apply these to my code. Any ideas?
<head>
<script language="JavaScript">
function show(){
var elements = document.getElementsByClassName("label");
for(var i = 0, length = elements.length; i < length; i++) {
elements[i].style.display = 'block';
}
}
</script>
<style>
.label {
-webkit-padding-start: 20px;
display: none;
}
</style>
</head>
<body>
<div>
<div onclick="show()">1st Row</div>
<div>
<div class="label">First</div>
<div class="label">Second</div>
<div class="label">Third</div>
</div>
<div>2nd Row</div>
</div>
</body>
If you are planning to use jQuery then you can use slideDown and slideUp method to show/hide elements with animation. There is slideToggle method which alternatively show/hides the element with animcation. You can modify your show method as below
Working demo
function show(obj){
var $this = $(obj);//Here obj points to the element clicked
//Now you have to show/hide the next sibling of the element clicked
//We will use next() method which gives the next sibling of element
//And then call slideToggle on it to show/hide alternatively
$this.next().slideToggle();
}
Change in the markup
<div onclick="show(this)">1st Row</div>
function show() {
$('.label').slideDown();
}
This selects all elements with the .label class and slides them into view. There is also a .fadeIn() function.
Also, you can attach click handlers by selectors (like an id or class):
<div>
<div class="row">1st Row</div>
<div>
<div class="label">First</div>
<div class="label">Second</div>
<div class="label">Third</div>
</div>
<div class="row">2nd Row</div>
</div>
Notice I removed the onClick="" statement and added a class to the row div. Then you can select the element you want to attach the click event to and keep all the code in one place:
$('.row').bind('click', function () {
$(this).next().find('.label').slideToggle();
});
This JavaScript above adds a click handler to all elements with the row class and toggles the display of all of the elements with the label class in the next element.
Here is a jsfiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/L34g3/.
I have a a link that looks similar to this
Blog
As you can the link has an ID of 'blog' what I want to do is to create an div on the fly with the ID from the link that was clicked so if the 'blog' is clicked, then the markup would be
<div id="blog">
<!--some content here-->
</div>
Like wise if for instance the news link is clicked then I would like,
<div id="news">
<!--some content here-->
</div>
to be created in the markup if this possible? and how Im pretty new to jQuery.
Try this:
$("a").click(function(){
$("#wrapper").append("<div id=" + this.id + "></div>");
});
Not tested, should work ;)
where: #wrapper is parent element, work on all a as you see.
You will need to give the div a different ID. Perhaps you could give it a class instead:
$("#blog").click(function() {
$(this).after("<div class='blog'>...</div>");
return false;
});
That's just one of many ways to create a div. You probably also want to avoid duplicates however in which case, use something like this:
$("#blog").click(function() {
var content = $("#blog_content");
if (content.length == 0) {
content = $("<div></div>").attr("id", "blog_content");
$(this).after(content);
}
content.html("...");
return false;
});
As for how to handle multiple such links I would do something like this:
Blog
News
Weather
<div id="content"></div>
with:
$("a.content").click(function() {
$("#content").load('/content/' + this.id, function() {
$(this).fadeIn();
});
return false;
});
The point is this one event handler handles all the links. It's done cleanly with classes for the selector and IDs to identify them and it avoids too much DOOM manipulation. If you want each of these things in a separate <div> I would statically create each of them rather than creating them dynamically. Hide them if you don't need to see them.
Try This :
<a id="blog">Blog</a>
<a id="news">news</a>
<a id="test1">test1</a>
<a id="test2">test2</a>
$('a').click(function()
{
$('<div/>',{
id : this.id,
text : "you have clicked on : " + this.id
}).appendTo("#" + this.id);
});
First of all you should not make 2 elements with same ID. At your example a and div will both have id="blog". Not XHTML compliant, plus might mess up you JS code if u refernce them.
Here comes non-jquery solution (add this within script tags):
function addDiv (linkElement) {
var div = document.createElement('div');
div.id = linkElement.id;
div.innerHTML = '<!--some content here-->';
document.body.appendChild(div); // adds element to body
}
Then add to HTML element an "event handler":
Blog
This question describes how to create a div. However, you shouldn't have two elements with same IDs. Is there any reason why you can't give it an id like content_blog, or content_news?
Unfortunately if you click on a link the page you go to has no idea what the idea of the link you clicked was. The only information it knows is what's contained in the URL. A better way to do this would be to use the querystring:
Blog
Then using the jQuery querystring plugin you could create the div like:
$("wrapper").add("div").attr("id", $.query.get("id"));
You shouldn't have elements in your page with the same ID. Use a prefix if you like, or perhaps a class.
However, the answer is as follows. I am imagining that your clickable links are within a div with the ID "menu", and your on-the-fly divs are to be created within a div with the ID "content".
$('div#menu a').click(function(){
$('div#content').append('<div id="content_'+this.id+'"><!-- some content here --></div>');
});
Any problems, ask in the comments!
Also the following statement is available to create a div dynamically.
$("<div>Hello</div>").appendTo('.appendTo');
Working fiddle: https://jsfiddle.net/andreitodorut/xbym0bsu/
you can try this code
$('body').on('click', '#btn', function() {
$($('<div>').text('NewDive').appendTo("#old")).fadeOut(0).fadeIn(1000);
})
#old > div{
width: 100px;
background: gray;
color: white;
height: 20px;
font: 12px;
padding-left: 4px;
line-height: 20px;
margin: 3px;
}
