Get script's own source from Greasemonkey script - javascript

I know that with basic JS you can read a <script>'s source code like so:

So my question is: Is there any way similar to this in Greasemonkey/Tampermonkey? I want to be able to read the Greasmonkey script's source code as string.
The reason I'm asking is because the Greasemonkey script is magically included to the page and doesn't have a "physical" representation like the above <script> block.
More background: I'm writing a script but it needs a lot of styles and also a Mustache template which is really hard to provide in JavaScript in a readable form. I want to prevent having the escape every single apostrophe or quote character and also joining the string or adding \ at the end of the line. I found a tricky way to do this, but still looking for alternatives. Here's the current version:

How to find where javascript starts and end in asp files?

I need to write a script in c# that recognizes javascript inside an ASP file.
I would like to start deleting all comments, but I am facing the problem: to know if a sequence of characters is a comment or not I need to know first if I am inside HTML or a script written in javascript.
Is there a (quite simple) way to recognize where the javascript code starts and ends?
Let's suppose I have this file, I need to remove the comment in javascript but not the same string in HTML, where it is not a comment:

I am relatively new to JavaScript so this might be somewhat trivial. However I can't seem to find the answer to this question.
Say I have a JavaScript file (bar.js) with a function in it called foo(). I want to call this function (foo) inside a script tag. I would like it to work like so.

foo();
</script>
I am not able to get this to work. I have ran the JavaScript console with my browser and what it seems to be doing is...nothing. No syntax errors or anything.
I can run a function similarly with a button click...using the script tag above and this.
<button type="button" onclick="foo();">Click Me</button>
I could do it this way, but in the actual circumstance I need to pass parameters into the function that is being called on the button click. I can't get those recognized either. I'm sure that something to do with scope.
The way I tried this was like so...

.... (some more html)

Here I get that a is undefined. Which leads me to think that it is a scope problem. The script tag is in the head section and the button is in the body section. Can you put script tags outside of the head and body tags to make global data?

You need to first include the javascript containing the function:
<script type="text/javascript" src="bar.js"></script>
and then call it in another script tag:
<script type="text/javascript">
foo();
</script>
In your example you seem to have mixed 2 notions into a single script tag which is invalid: include an external javascript file and in the body of the script tag write your code.
According to the specification:
The script may be defined within the contents of the SCRIPT element or
in an external file. If the src attribute is not set, user agents must
interpret the contents of the element as the script. If the src has a
URI value, user agents must ignore the element's contents and retrieve
the script via the URI.
So basically you should avoid such situations and have separate script tags for including external files and for writing inline js.

How to put "</script>" in a javascript string?

I've been trying some tricks in javascript and came to a ridiculous problem: I can't use <script> as a substring in a javascript string! Here is an example:

Question: How can I use <script> followed by </script> substrings in Javascript, and why is it acting that way?

What's tripping you up is the </script>. The HTML parser doesn't recognize Javascript strings or nested <script> tags, so it's interpreting that as the closing tag for the initial <script>. That is, this part of the document is parsed as:
<script> (open tag)
alert("<script> (text node - contents of the script)
</script> (close tag)
"); (text node - plain text)
The second </script> is ignored, as there's no other <script> tag for it to close.
To work around this, break up </script so that the HTML parser doesn't see it. For instance:
alert("<script><\/script>");
or:
alert("<script><" + "/script>");
or just put the code in an external Javascript file. This issue only arises for inline scripts.
it is because of the \ I believe. i have no concrete explanation since I am a newbie to Javascript but this code should work:

came up with it using Java knowledge.. Haha since the \ is an escape key in many languages.

Include another HTML file in a HTML file

I have 2 HTML files, suppose a.html and b.html. In a.html I want to include b.html.
In JSF I can do it like that:
<ui:include src="b.xhtml" />
It means that inside a.xhtml file, I can include b.xhtml.
How can we do it in *.html file?
In my opinion the best solution uses jQuery:

This method is a simple and clean solution to my problem.

Expanding lolo's answer, here is a little more automation if you have to include a lot of files. Use this JS code:

My solution is similar to the one of lolo above. However, I insert the HTML code via JavaScript's document.write instead of using jQuery:
a.html:

The reason for me against using jQuery is that jQuery.js is ~90kb in size, and I want to keep the amount of data to load as small as possible.
In order to get the properly escaped JavaScript file without much work, you can use the following sed command:
sed 's/\\/\\\\/g;s/^.*$/&\\/g;s/'\''/\\'\''/g' b.html > escapedB.html

Since old browsers don't support seamless, you should add some css to fix it:

Keep in mind that for browsers that don't support seamless, if you click a link in the iframe it will make the frame go to that url, not the whole window. A way to get around that is to have all links have target="_parent", tho the browser support is "good enough".

As an alternative, if you have access to the .htaccess file on your server, you can add a simple directive that will allow php to be interpreted on files ending in .html extension.

Now you can use a simple php script to include other files such as:

This is what helped me. For adding a block of html code from b.html to a.html, this should go into the head tag of a.html:

But here is my very simple take on it (based on Lolo's answer).
It relies on the HTML5 data-* attributes and therefore is very generic in that is uses jQuery's for-each function to get every .class matching "load-html" and uses its respective 'data-source' attribute to load the content:

Most of the solutions works but they have issue with jquery:
The issue is following code $(document).ready(function () { alert($("#includedContent").text()); } alerts nothing instead of alerting included content.
I write the below code, in my solution you can access to included content in $(document).ready function:

For example, on the page you import HTML block like that:

The importer replaces the directive with the loaded HTML pretty much like SSI
These directives will be served automatically as soon as you load this small JavaScript:

It will process the imports when DOM is ready automatically. Besides, it exposes an API that you can use to run manually, to get logs and so on. Enjoy :)

Did you try a iFrame injection?
It injects the iFrame in the document and deletes itself (it is supposed to be then in the HTML DOM)

html5rocks.com has a very good tutorial on this stuff, and this might be a little late, but I myself didn't know this existed. w3schools also has a way to do this using their new library called w3.js. The thing is, this requires the use of a web server and and HTTPRequest object. You can't actually load these locally and test them on your machine. What you can do though, is use polyfills provided on the html5rocks link at the top, or follow their tutorial. With a little JS magic, you can do something like this:

This will make the link (Can change to be the wanted link element if already set), set the import (unless you already have it), and then append it. It will then from there take that and parse the file in HTML, and then append it to the desired element under a div. This can all be changed to fit your needs from the appending element to the link you are using. I hope this helped, it may irrelevant now if newer, faster ways have come out without using libraries and frameworks such as jQuery or W3.js.
UPDATE: This will throw an error saying that the local import has been blocked by CORS policy. Might need access to the deep web to be able to use this because of the properties of the deep web. (Meaning no practical use)

There is no direct HTML solution for the task for now. Even HTML Imports (which is permanently in draft) will not do the thing, because Import != Include and some JS magic will be required anyway.
I recently wrote a VanillaJS script that is just for inclusion HTML into HTML, without any complications.
Just place in your a.html

You can do that with JavaScript's library jQuery like this:

Please note that banner.html should be located under the same domain your other pages are in otherwise your webpages will refuse the banner.html file due to Cross-Origin Resource Sharing policies.
Also, please note that if you load your content with JavaScript, Google will not be able to index it so it's not exactly a good method for SEO reasons.

Using <script> inside a jQuery-template

I'm using jQuery-templates for the first time, and I need my template to include some javascript, so it it run when the template is rendered.
I need at timestamp for the current time...

When the HTML parser finds <script> it will start parsing the contents until it finds </script> which is present in:
document.write("<script src='links7.js?'+Math.random()+></script>
As such, you'll need to change the source so that it's not parsed as the end of a script element:
document.write("<script src='links7.js?'+Math.random()+></scri" + "pt>");
Ideally, you'd have HTML escaped all your inline JavaScript code, which would also mitigate this issue:
document.write("<script src='links7.js?'+Math.random()+></script&
For your particular case (which is different enough for me to not mark as a dupe), make sure that your content between your script tags is HTML escaped, or correctly placed between <![CDATA[ ]]> tags.

That all being said, you should be calling the necessary JS during the rendering process, and not injecting a script element into the DOM unnecessarily.
