Does anyone know how to autoselect in a selectbox? I want to do is even though there is a blank option the selectbox will still show the option that has a value on it.
Does anyone know how to do it in jquery?
html code:
<select name="name">
<option></option>
<option>Mark</option>
</select>
<select name="age">
<option></option>
<option>16</option>
</select>
May this help you :
HTML:
<select name="name">
<option></option>
<option>Mark</option>
</select>
<select name="age" id='some'>
<option></option>
<option>16</option>
</select>
Jquery:
$($('#some').children()[1]).attr('selected',true)
If you have more than one empty option, and there is no order, this is the best solution I think: jsFiddle Live Demo
What we've done here is, checking every selectbox by a each loop:
$('select').each(function()
{
});
And then inside the loop we find the first option which is not empty:
$(this).find('option:not(:empty)').first()
And make it selected by prop:
$(this).find('option:not(:empty)').first().prop('selected',true);
So the whole jQuery and Html will be:
jQuery
$('select').each(function()
{
$(this).find('option:not(:empty)').first().prop('selected',true);
});
HTML
<select name="name">
<option></option>
<option>Mark</option>
</select>
<select name="age">
<option></option>
<option>16</option>
<option>20</option>
<option></option>
<option>55</option>
<option></option>
</select>
If you want to do this to all select boxes on the page, use this:
$(function () {
$('select').each(function () {
$(this).find('option').not(':empty()').first().attr('selected', true);
})
});
It grabs each select, finds the first option that is not empty (read: has text inside it) and sets the selected attribute.
See the fiddle.
No need for javascript to do this, if you want to select (Mark) for example, do it like this
<select name="name">
<option></option>
<option selected>Mark</option>
</select>
and in XHTML:
<select name="name">
<option></option>
<option selected="selected">Mark</option>
</select>

I want to display the value in a "select > option" in an based on the location selected from my tag.
Here is the html:
<select name="stateCoord" id="stateCoord" autocomplete="off">
<option selected="selected">SELECT STATE</option>
<option value="lg">Lagos</option>
<option value="abj">Abuja</option>
</select>
<input type="text" name="stateCoordInfo" value="" id="stateCoordInfo" readonly>
And here is the javascript:
$(document).ready(function() {
$("#stateCoord option").filter(function() {
return $(this).val() == $("#stateCoordInfo").val();
}).attr('selected', true);
$("#stateCoord").live("change", function() {
$("#stateCoordInfo").val($(this).find("option:selected").attr("value"));
});
});
I'm still getting the hang on javascript so a detailed explanation won't hurt. Thanks in advance.
If I assume correctly, you want this:
1) initialization of the select option at document ready, that strange thing the code with filter() was trying to do.
2) Capture the change event on the select and show the value of the current selected option on the input. This is what the live() (deprecated) part was trying to do.
$(document).ready(function()
{
$("#stateCoord").val("").change();
$("#stateCoord").change(function()
{
$("#stateCoordInfo").val($(this).val());
});
});
<script src="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/jquery/3.3.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<select name="stateCoord" id="stateCoord">
<option value="" selected>SELECT STATE</option>
<option value="lg">Lagos</option>
<option value="abj">Abuja</option>
</select>
<input type="text" name="stateCoordInfo" value="" id="stateCoordInfo">
$(document).ready(function() {
$("body").on("change","#stateCoord",function() {
$("#stateCoordInfo").val($(this).find("option:selected").val());
});
$("#stateCoord").trigger("change");
});
From what I understand, you want to update the text shown in the readonly text box with the value attribute of the selected option from the dropdown.
To do this, you just need to update the val of your read-only text box to the val of the drop-down whenever change event is fired.
$(document).ready(function() {
$('#stateCoord').change(function(e) {
$('#stateCoordInfo').val($(this).val());
});
});
<script src="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/jquery/3.3.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<select name="stateCoord" id="stateCoord" autocomplete="off">
<option selected="selected">SELECT STATE</option>
<option value="lg">Lagos</option>
<option value="abj">Abuja</option>
</select>
<input type="text" name="stateCoordInfo" value="" id="stateCoordInfo" readonly>
I am not sure, if this is what you need, but I think it should be: JSfiddle
Here is the JS code:
$(document).ready(function() {
$("#stateCoord").change(function() {
var value = $("#stateCoord option:selected").text();
$("#stateCoordInfo").val(value);
});
});
I have a html dropdown field where there should be a text field added at the bottom naming other.The text typed in this field should come as other:text
drop down html is :
<select name="drop">
<option selected="selected">Please select ...</option>
<option value="car">car</option>
<option value="bike">bike</option>
<option value="Other">Other</option>
</select>
Here other should be text field.For understanding i kept other as option,but i want that to be a input text field where value is given by user.
Thanks in advance
You could add hidden input field by default for other text :
<input type='text' id='other' name='other' style="display:none"/>
And capture the change on select in your js then check if selected option value equal Other and show the field or hide it :
$('select').on('change', function(){
if($(this).val()=='Other'){
$('#other').show().focus();
}else{
$('#other').val('').hide();
}
})
Hope this helps.
$('select').on('change', function(){
if($(this).val()=='Other'){
$('#other').show().focus();
}else{
$('#other').val('').hide();
}
})
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<select name="drop">
<option selected="selected">Please select ...</option>
<option value="car">car</option>
<option value="bike">bike</option>
<option value="Other">Other</option>
</select>
<input type='text' id='other' name='other' style="display:none" value='other:'/>
<script type="text/javascript">
function showfield(name){
if(name=='Other')document.getElementById('div1').innerHTML='Other: <input type="text" name="other" />';
else document.getElementById('div1').innerHTML='';
}
</script>
<select name="drop" id="drop" onchange="showfield(this.options[this.selectedIndex].value)">
<option selected="selected">Please select ...</option>
<option value="car">car</option>
<option value="bike">bike</option>
<option value="Other">Other</option>
</select>
<div id="div1"></div>
you could go the other way and make all options accessible by the text field - but giving an autocomplete option as the user types. This can be done with jQuery autocomplete plugins etc or the new html5 datalist. This ties a predetermined set of options to the textfield - allowing the user to select from it if theinput value matches the value, but also allows for alternative text to be entered if there are no matches. Just note though that Safari (and possible other browsers) do not support this feature yet. But its very cool when it is supported.
<input id="transportOptions" list="transport">

Is there a way to insert values in a drop down menu with a simple form? I have this drop down menu
<form>
<select name="users" onchange="showUser(this.value)">
<option value="">Select a category:</option>
<option value="movie">Movie</option>
<option value="musik">Musik</option>
<option value="books">Books</option>
<option value="images">Images</option>
</select>
</form>
Should I use an array? I been searching the net but couldn't find anything that would help.
Here is a JavaScript solution to add items to a drop down.
The HTML to use..
<form>
<select id="categories" name="users" onchange="showUser(this.value)">
<option value="">Select a category:</option>
<option value="movie">Movie</option>
<option value="musik">Musik</option>
<option value="books">Books</option>
<option value="images">Images</option>
</select>
</form>
JavaScript code...
var categories = document.getElementById("categories");
var newOption = document.createElement('option');
newOption.innerText = "New value";
newOption.setAttribute('value', 'newvalue');
categories.appendChild(newOption);
jQuery code... (a lot shorter)
$("#categories").append("<option value='newvalue'>New Value</option>");
Here is the JavaScript JSFiddle and the jQuery JSFiddle to play with!
You could look into jQuery append() and option() with click event...
I've just created a working solution for you.
Don't know if this is what you was looking for, but this is how it works:
You simply just write the value and visual option name into a form text field: value, text which gives you this:
<option value="value">text</option>
<select id="mySelect"></select>
<p> </p>
<input type="text" id="string"><br>
<button id="append">Append</button>
$('#append').click(function(){
var str = $('#string').val();
var substr = str.split(', ');
$('#mySelect').append( new Option(substr[0],substr[1]));
});
Here is a working version: http://jsfiddle.net/SCf8m/1/
I'm fairly new to javascript and I'm trying to make an form for my website and I'm stuck on the javascript,
This is what I have:
<script type="text/javascript">
function hide(opt) {
if (getElementsByClassName(opt).style.display='none';){
getElementsByClassName(opt).style.display='block';
}
else{
getElementsByClassName(opt).style.display='none';
}
}
</script>
What I intended the script to do was recieve a variable (the option chosen by the user) and then reveal all the elements with the class of the same name (so if the option was orc the orc div would be displayed, but be hidden if the option chosen was elf etc.)
Html:
<form name="chargen" action="" method="post">
Name:<Input name="name" type="text" />
Gender:<select name="gender">
<option>Choose Gender...</option>
<option>Male</option>
<option>Female</option>
</select>
Species:<select name="species" onchange="hide(document.chargen.species.options[
document.chargen.species.selectedIndex ].value)">
<option> Choose Species...</option>
<option value="human">Human</option>
<option value="orc">Orc</option>
<option value="elf">Elf</option>
<option value="dwarf">Dwarf</option>
<option value="drow">Drow</option>
<option value="ent">Ent</option>
</select>
<div class="human" style="display:none;">
Sub Species:<select name="subspecies1">
<option>Norseman</option>
<option>Hellenic</option>
<option>Heartlander</option>
</select>
</div>
<div class="orc" style="display:none;">
Sub Species:<select name="subspecies2">
<option>Black Orc</option>
<option>Fel Orc</option>
<option>Green Orc</option>
</select>
</div>
<div class="human" style="display:none;">
Homeland:<select name="homeland1">
<option>Choose Homeland...</option>
<option value="citadel">Citadel</option>
<option value="wildharn">Wildharn</option>
<option value="Merith">Merith</option>
</select>
</div>
<div class="orc" style="display:none;">
Homeland:<select name="homeland2">
<option>Choose Homeland...</option>
<option value="1">Berherak</option>
<option value="2">Vasberan</option>
</select>
</div>
Unfortunately nothing happens when I change the contents of the species combobox (I've tried on multiple browsers) What am I doing wrong?
I realise that getElementsByClassName() is a HTML5 function, but according to the interwebs it is compatible with all major browsers.
Thanks for your time
getElementsByClassName returns an array, you must iterate on the result. And be careful to the = in tests (instead of ==).
But I suggest you have a look at jquery. Your life will be easier as what you want can be done as :
$('.human, .orc, .elf, .dwarf, .drow, .ent').hide();
$('.'+opt).show();
(see fiddle : http://jsfiddle.net/dystroy/2GmZ3/)
These are Dynamic dependent select controls. The sets of values of (1-3, 4-6, 7-9) determine the use hide/show divs function. The problem is the function i have only hide/show depending on the div id. How can i make the function hide/show div depended on the values(1-3, 4-6, 7-9) found in the selectbox?
Jquery
$('#select').change(function() {
$('#sub1, #sub2, #sub3').hide();
$('#sub' + $(this).find('option:selected').attr('id')).show();
});
Html Setup
<html>
<select size="6" id="category">
<option value="">categories 1-3 </option>
<option value="">----</option>
<option value="">----</option>
</select>
<div id="sub1" style="display:none">
<select name="subc1" size="6">
<option value="1">subcategories 4-6</option>
<option value="2">---</option>
<option value="3">---</option>
</select>
</div>
<div id="sub2" style="display:none">
<select name="subc2" size="6">
<option value="4">subcategories 7-9</option>
<option value="5">----</option>
<option value="6">----</option>
</select>
</div>
<div id="sub3" style="display:none">
<select name="subc3" size="6">
<option value="7">End</option>
<option value="8">----</option>
<option value="9">----</option>
</select>
</div>
</html>
select the value from drop down change function and do the operation depends on the value of drop down, following is the sample code
$(function() // Shorthand for $(document).ready(function() {
$('select').change(function() {
if($(this).val() == 1)
{
$('#sub1').hide();
$('#sub2').show();
}
});
});
You nee to change minor change in your category select
<select size="6" id="category">
<option value="1">categories 1-3 </option>
<option value="2">----</option>
<option value="3">----</option>
</select>
$('select#category').on('change', function() {
$('div[id=^sub]:visible').hide();
$('div#sub' + this.value).show();
});
can also use .change() instead of .on('change').
$('select#category').change(function() {
$('div[id=^sub]:visible').hide();
$('div#sub' + this.value).show();
});
NOTE:
$('div[id=^sub]:visible') will point to all divs that have id start with sub and visible.
You are trying with $('#select') which need to be $('#category') or $('select#category').
According to your comment:
Complete solution will look like following:
function isOnlyDashed(text) {
return text.replace(/-/g, '').length === 0;
}
$('select#category').change(function() {
var text = $('option:selected', this).text();
if (!isOnlyDashed(text)) {
$('div[id=^sub]:visible').hide();
$('div#sub' + this.value).show();
}
});
$('select[name^=subc]').change(function() {
var text = $('option:selected', this).text();
if (!isOnlyDashed(text)) {
$(this).parent() // jump to parent div
.next('div[id^=sub]:hidden') // go to next hidden div
.show();
}
});
Complete Workout
The problem with your code is that you have an incorrect selector.
$('#select')...
should be
$('select')...
Also, this part is wrong
$('#sub' + $(this).find('option:selected').attr('id')).show();
Replace it with this
$('#sub' + $(this).val()).show();
Finally, having different elements with the same name/id "sub1" is probably a bad idea, though technically not illegal. It is certainly confusing.

I have made minor changes in your Jquery code as well as added value in your first select drop-down list which was missing rest hope this helps.
Please lemme know if I missed anything! B-)
