Div width expand/shrink on click - javascript

For a site I'm making for myself and a friend, I have a div container/wrapper with 2 other divs within it: one occupies the left half and has a black background and the other occupies the right with a white background. Essentially, this lets me get a split colored background. Each div holds half of a logo. Here's the page, temporarily hosted so you guys can see it.
http://djsbydesign.com/tempsite/index.htm
At any rate, I'd like to have links on the left and right hand sides of the page that, on click, cause their respective divs to expand from 50% to 100%. I have a few ideas, but am not sure entirely how to go about doing this (I'm rather new to javascript). The first would be to have the expanding div's z-index set to something higher than the non-expanding one, and then have it expand (somehow), and the other is to have the expanding div expand to 100% while the other shrinks to 0% at an equal rate.
The bottom line is, I have no idea how to go about doing this. I don't mind using mootools or jQuery, for the record.

The following seems to work:
$('#left-bg, #right-bg').click(
function(){
$(this).animate({'width': '100%'},600).siblings().animate({'width':'0'},600);
});
Albeit I'm not sure how you'd plan to bring back the the 'other' div.
JS Fiddle demo.
Edited to add a button (via jQuery) that allows both divs to be reverted to original dimensions:
$('#left-bg, #right-bg').click(
function(){
$(this).animate({'width': '100%'},600).siblings().animate({'width':'0'},600);
$('<button class="show">Show all</button>')
.appendTo('#wrapper');
});
$('.show').live('click',
function(){
$('#left-bg').animate(
{
'width': '50%'
},600);
$('#right-bg').animate(
{
'width': '50%'
},600);
$(this).remove();
});
Updated JS Fiddle.
Edited to address the question left by OP in the comments:
is there a way to have a page redirect after the animation completes?
Yep, just add the line window.location.href = "http://path.to.url.com/";
$('#left-bg, #right-bg').click(
function(){
$(this).animate({'width': '100%'},600).siblings().animate({'width':'0'},600);
$('<button class="show">Show all</button>')
.appendTo('#wrapper');
window.location.href = "http://www.google.com/" // <-- this line redirects.
});
$('.show').live('click',
function(){
$('#left-bg').animate(
{
'width': '50%'
},600);
$('#right-bg').animate(
{
'width': '50%'
},600);
$(this).remove();
});
Updated JS Fiddle.
Edited in response to bug report (in comments):
The one other bug (easy fix) is that any time you click on either of the divs, it creates a new button. So say you clicked on the left half, and it expanded and filled the page, etc., and then you clicked on it again (it being anywhere on the page now). It would attempt to add a second button.
To prevent a second button being added to the div just add an if:
$('#left-bg, #right-bg').click(
function(){
if (!$('.show').length) {
$(this).animate({'width': '100%'},600).siblings().animate({'width':'0'},600);
$('<button class="show">Show all</button>')
.appendTo('#wrapper');
window.location.href = "http://www.google.com/" // <-- this line redirects.
}
});
Which, will only append a button, or indeed animate the divs, so long as the $('.show') selector returns no matches.
However if you're also redirecting to another page by clicking the button it shouldn't be an issue anyway, since none of the jQuery on the original page will exectute/be able to access the page to which the user is redirected (unless it's a page on your own domain, and you've explicitly chosen to add the same button).

If you give absolute positions to your div's such that - 1st is positioned at top left corner and other is positioned at top right corner. And then in click event you can change the position of the other top corner of the div to be expanded.
You can use jquery to do this easily. Check jquery documentation for setting css.

Looks like you've got jQuery included, so use that! It's totes the easiest library to do simple animations with.
Here's an example click function that will slide the right background to be 100% like you said:
$('a#link').click(function(e) {
e.preventDefault();
$('#left-bg').animate({ width : '0%' }, 'slow');
$('#right-bg').animate({ width : '100%' }, 'slow');
});
Obviously to go in the other direction you'd switch the width values in the object passed to the animate functions.
If you're not familiar with the animate function, check the docs, but basically you just pass CSS rules in a key : value object to it, and it'll change the CSS values over time - animating it!
Hope this helps!

Fading text+icon when scrolling down. Appears while again on top

I'm trying to create some sort of info "Scroll Down" button (not clickable) which has to be visible while scroll bar is up on top, fade out when scroll down a few pixels and fade back in when up again.
So far I was able to create the arrow and the message so far as well as the fading part.
Here is a fiddle: https://jsfiddle.net/8b3jL7r0/1/
var btn = $("#button");
$(window).scroll(function() {
if ($(window).scrollTop() < 100) {
btn.addClass("show");
} else {
btn.removeClass("show");
}
});
var btn2 = $("#scrolltxt");
$(window).scroll(function() {
if ($(window).scrollTop() < 100) {
btn2.addClass("showx");
} else {
btn2.removeClass("showx");
}
});
The problem with is that the arrow and the info text 'Scroll Down' does not appear right from the beginning, you have to scroll down a bit so they appear on top and then everything works smooth. Any clue how to make them visible right from the first load of the code?
Any idea how could I transfer all this code into one single code module in WordPress and have it work exactly like in the fiddle ? Because I've tried to insert it but it seems to not work at all, nothing appears on the page, not the arrow nor the info text.
I just added the inital classes to both elements:
https://jsfiddle.net/4e2cafju/
<div id="button" class="show"></div>
<div id="scrolltxt" class="showx">scroll down</div>
for 2:
You should be able to put these elements directly into a template. You should be able to add the css to the style sheet. And you could lnk to an external JS file. That would probably be best practice. You could also put all the code into a single page. I'm not sure how your wordpress install / theme is set up.

Javascript focusing a large div with fixed header

I'm using a tiny library called '$.scrollTo' to animate a scroll to a div element in my html. at the top of my page I have a fixed navgation bar.
at the end of the animation, I would like to have that div focused (for accessibility). if my div is to large, at the end of the animation, the fact that it gets focus - simply sends it a bit off the screen.
This does not happen with small divs.
here is my code (check jsfiddle below):
$('#buttonid').on("click", function() {
//fixed nav bar height (to compensate when scrolling)
var fixed_navbar_height = $("#navbar-id").height();
//the element to scroll to
var $go_to_selector = $("#topic2");
$.scrollTo($go_to_selector, {
duration: 1000,
offset: -fixed_navbar_height,
onAfter: function() {
//if you comment out this .focus it works as intended.
$go_to_selector.focus();
}
});
});
here is a JSFIDDLE example:
https://jsfiddle.net/dy35obpq/3/
obviously the onAfter messes it up, but i would like both the animation and the focus. Any ideas on how to implement a focus on a large div without letting it change the scroll bar ? suggestions are more than welcome.
Try this.
onAfter: function() {
$go_to_selector.focus();
$(window).scrollTop($($go_to_selector).offset().top - fixed_navbar_height);
}
I have simply added this line in your onAfter callback.
$(window).scrollTop($($go_to_selector).offset().top - fixed_navbar_height);
and it seems to have fixed the problem while still retaining focus. You might want to use css to disable the focus blue highlight.

Show the button at the table bottom even when the window is very small

I have a table sorter html page, the sample is here.
$('table').tablesorter({
theme: 'blue',
widgets: ['zebra', 'scroller'],
widgetOptions: {
scroller_height: 400
}
});
How can I make the bottom button visible even when the windows height is very small (say, can only show one or two rows)? Ideally scroller_height can be some type like $(window).height()/2 and it can automatically update when the window is resized.
The expected is that even when the window is small, the bottom button appears in the screen without scroll action.
If you want to make the scroller window dynamically adjust its height, there are two demos on the main wiki page under Widgets > Scroller.
http://jsfiddle.net/Mottie/txLp4xuk/2/
http://jsfiddle.net/Mottie/abkNM/8037/
Essentially, all you need to do is adjust the outer scroll window height
$('.tablesorter-scroller-table').css({
height: '',
'max-height': height + 'px'
});
Here is the demo you shared updated, and has a minimum height set to 100px.
I'd say that there are a few ways to achieve what you want, and one easy way is to:
create a function that checks the visibility of your table versus the viewport;
Code below:
function checkVisible() {
var bottom_of_table = $("#mytable").offset().top + $("#mytable").outerHeight();
var bottom_of_screen = $(window).scrollTop() + $(window).height();
if(bottom_of_screen > bottom_of_table){
$("#buttons-container").removeClass('bottom-fixed');
}
else {
$("#buttons-container").addClass('bottom-fixed');
}
}
If it exceeds the viewport, add a CSS class to your buttons container that fixes it to the bottom of the screen. Otherwise, remove this class and display the button container normally, at the bottom of the table.
You'd want to run this function-check on load and on window resize, as follows:
$(document).ready(function() {
checkVisible();
$(window).on('resize', checkVisible);
});
I've updated your fiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/12nt19vg/12/show/
Try resizing the window and let me know if this is the behavior you're looking for.
EDIT: Incorporating your additional spec in the comments, I've added an outer div to your buttons container and modified your CSS to visually create the effect that I think you're looking for.
Please take a look at this fiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/12nt19vg/27/show/

Make scrollTo make div scroll all the way?

I have a div with only horizontal overflow. With a link outside the div, I'm trying to scroll the div to a certain image (think of a horizontal gallery scrolling to the right).
I used the following javascript. It works fine in the webpage.
However, the DIV containing the gallery is larger than most images. Consequently the browser window will scroll only until the requested div comes in from the right and is now fully on screen, and not one pixel more. However, I would like the div to scroll all the way, so that the image is all the way hugging the left edge of the container.
I hope I'm making sense, I'm not terribly experienced, but I couldn't find an answer to my question online.
$(document).ready(function(){
$('#gimg1').click(function() {
$.scrollTo($('#gimg1link'), 1000);
});
$('#gimg2').click(function() {
$.scrollTo($('#gimg2link'), 1000);
});
$('#gimg3').click(function() {
$.scrollTo($('#gimg3link'), 1000);
});
$('#gimg4').click(function() {
$.scrollTo($('#gimg4link'), 1000);
});
});
<div id="gallery">
<img class="galleryimage" id="gimg1" src="lb1.jpg">
<img class="galleryimage" id="gimg2" src="lb2.jpg">
<img class="galleryimage" id="gimg3" src="lb3.jpg">
<img class="galleryimage" id="gimg4" src="lb4.jpg">
</div>
Image 1
Image 2
Image 3
Image 4
You are using the image and link selectors in your jquery in the wrong order.
$('#gimg1').click(function() {
$.scrollTo($('#gimg1link'), 1000);
});
This snippet means "when the image #gimg1 is clicked, scroll to the position of the link #gimg1link". You want it the other way round: when the link is clicked, scroll to the image.
Reversing those selectors gives you a working slider: jsFiddle
The last image will always stay on the right of the screen, because that's where the document ends and it can't scroll any further. The other images will scroll all the way to the left as long as your document width allows it.
Also, you could optimize your javascript a lot by not copy-pasting the same code but just making it more generic:
$(document).ready(function(){
$('a[id^=gimg]').click(function() { // when a link with an ID starting with "gimg" is clicked
var linkID = $(this).attr('id'); // get the whole id from this link
var imgID = linkID.replace('link', ''); // get the img ID it relates to by removing the 'link' part
$scrollTo( $('#' + imgID), 1000); // scroll to the image this link belongs to
});
});
Now it doesn't matter how many links and images you add, as long as they all use the same naming convention.
Based on this answer i adapted the code to suit your need. It uses the clicked thumbnail index to find the corresponding image left, and set scrollLeft of the viewport to this value.
$('#nav li').click(function(){
var clickedIndex = $(this).index();
var targetElement = $('#viewport ul li').eq(clickedIndex);
var elementPosition = targetElement.position();
$('#viewport').animate({scrollLeft: elementPosition.left},500);
});

JQuery animated banner

So I previously asked a question about how to create a banner like the one shown here and I got a really good answer to start me off. I have been working on it since and I'm having a lot of problems getting the animation to slide back to it's original position.
Here is my animation: http://jsfiddle.net/43nCF/ (don't click the green block first)
Issue: After the first time you toggle a block, clicking another block will not move it to the left.
I also have some other minor issues which I would be grateful if someone helped me with.
How do I get the width and the moving of the blocks to animate simultaneously like in the banner animation I am trying to replicate?
How do I get the block to slide back to the original position instead of just kind of 'transporting' there?
I am only beginner at jQuery so any help would be amazing.Thanks.
As for the positioning problem: you need to drop the left declaration in your second function.
Regarding making the animation act simultanous: animate both the right and the width property for each element, in one call:
function() {
var position = $.data(this, 'position');
var ind = $(this).index();
//moves image back to original position
$('#container div').each(
function() {
$(this).animate({
right: "",
width: 100
});
});
});
Working example here.
I see you have a response.
In case this version is of any help to you:
http://jsfiddle.net/vCbcz/
Instead of altering the divs other than the one being affected, I wrapped them all in a #slider div and adjusted that one's left margin to push it to the left.
$('#slider').animate({
marginLeft: '-' + ind * 105 + 'px'
});
and back
$('#slider').animate({
marginLeft: 0 + 'px'
});
There is a much easier way altogether of doing this. By using jQuery's scrollTo plugin, this can be done in a mere few lines of code, without using indices, calculations, or anything of that nature.
